Yes there was, they took they 308 down to 304 which first appeared in the VL due to Group A regulations, off the top of my head.

Talking about NOW not ancient history.

funny how people all moan about the homogenisation of the racing - with similar cars etc. Bear in mind nascar has 4 manufacturers (ford chev dodge and toyota) and very similar cars, with very tight mandated rules and restrictor plates, and still attracts massive crowds for 30 plus meetings a year and is one of the most watched motorsports on television. I believe the future will have the fans supporting the drivers more than based on brand loyalty, particularly once the car of the future arrives. Having said that, it was cool to grow up in the times when there was a variety of makes, even if some were streets ahead of the others.

at least for the commodore thats not really the way it is
the Zeta platform was partially developed in Oz , but the VE was based of it as was the Caddy CTS (& yes, the new Camaro)

The 308 was destrokedfor Group A regs in 1985 for the VK, and since when did the Mustang share the Falcons chassis. It still uses a live axle not the Falcons IRS.

I visualized your words.
Then shuddered.

Beat me to it. I'm actually getting the idea the guys bleating about the aus series don't actually watch/follow motorsport.
ryanm2,

yeah, seems most only watch whats on tv, often complemented by tits, ad breaks and whinging from arm chair experts.

You're all living in the past. Get a race going with some Hennessy Venom Vipers, Aston Martin V12's and a few Bugatti's thrown in for good luck. Now THAT would be a real race!
wrong2,

Holdens use LS3's
the W427 used the LS7
chris_051,

And your point! About the only thing resembling the road cars is the door skins and lights.

that you didnt get the era being talked about with the Dhead post

and crowds died off. The japs, Europeans have their main race the day before [when the crowd would rather be sleeping in or drinking piss] The next day is simply for Fords and Chevrolet powered Holdens. simple as that buddy
sfw4,
Jun 20, 7:40pm
Theyd get their arses kicked im sorry to say. The Bathurst 24hr race. Holden put in a 427Chev powered Monaro against Lamboghini, Ferrari, Porsche etc and won. And all that European crap against a 1960's designed Chevrolet pushrod engine LMAO! that is so funny ;)

well paint me bogan then. class is class the jap cars rust away before the can become classy
foxdonut,

You guys.
The reason the racing is boring is because its all tier 1 FIA spec regulations. Ya'll know the modern V8 Supercar vehicle is a third party rolling body and 1 of2 regulation motors. The only thing "Holden" or "Ford" in either of them is (literally) Headlamps, grill, wing mirrors, windsheild, tail lights.
Nothing else from the road cars makes it into the V8 SuperCar category car.
It wasn't done because of some magical Jap import or what not, it was done to create parity and a properly defined race series.
If you want open class racing there's plenty of GT3 stuff you can tune into.

Gen 3 engines were designed in the 1990's
that race wasnt won by a production car btw. wouldnt have been allowed if it wasnt Holden
sfw4,
Jun 20, 7:52pm
427Chev still with 'pushrod' 1960's technology. not quad overhead cams& bells and whistles etc
foxdonut,
Jun 20, 7:54pm
Lulz. I love when someone raises this subject.
Some pointers:
The two "Monaro's" that ran had premiere SC series drivers.
The rest of the field was made up of privateer teams. The guys driving the Micellotto 360 hadn't seen the course in person until the day before the race.
The "Monaros" were running SC set up chassis from the SuperCar season.
The GT3 cars got a half a day for tune and settings
The "Monaros" Had Corvette C6R LSX Le Mans LMGT1 seven litre motors
The GT3 cars had their usual +10% power upgrade 3 and 4 litre motors, the Viper (Not a Hennesey btw, they have turbo chargers) was detuned for parity.
If you want equal footing you need parity like I said in an earlier post.
Put your five litre Series 1 CV8 Monaro in a race with a factory bog standard three and a half litre Ferrari 360 (let alone a Challenge Stradale, and definitely not a GT3 mod marque) and guess who comesout trumps.
Hint - it ain't the munter mobile 15 second 1/4 mile Holden.

LS was a new design - while the basic layout is the same as the old 60's crap - so are most piston engines
DOHC was in vogue back in the 1920's - that dont make my nissan SR20 the same does it
sfw4,
Jun 20, 7:56pm
and Ferrari wouldnt have hotted their engine up with all the goodies right!
