Selling car to wreckers?

sit1, Jun 15, 12:04am
Anyone sold their car to wreckers for parts! I have an audi 100that has a reconditioned engine, buggar was that Ijust got that done and then it developed an oil leak so now it needs the engine removed to fix the oil leak, which will cost more in mechanic time than possibly the car is worth.Just trying to figure out how I can get back some of them money I paid for the reconditioned engine repair. Anyone got any good ideas! TIA

The only wrecker that may value the car as more than scrap value will be someone specialising in Euro cars and Audis in particular.
Track down the local Audi parts guru for best price !

hang on, so you've reconditioned an engine (assuming you've spent $2-3000 doing so), yet you're wanting to send it away to a wreckers where you'll get $200-300 at best! Surely you would be better off selling the whole car as a runner but with a oil leak fault for a bit more!

Got any more details of the car, ie year, kms travelled, engine size, auto/manual etc!

2.0, 2.3, 2.6 or 2.8!

No its not, I was really annoyed that it got an oil leak approx 1 month after the mechanics warranty ran out. I realise now I probably should have taken it back to the mechanic and complained but in the meanwhile it has been siting for about a year unused. But yes now I know what is wrong with it, it does make you wonder why the mechanic did not think to replace the oil seal while they had the engine out the first time.

Why was the engine out in the first place!

where does it leak!

sit1, Jun 15, 8:05am
they took the engine out to put in another reconditioned one.

the leak is from the oil seal between the engine and the gearbox, but you need to take the engine out to get to it to repair it, least that is my understanding.

What sort of mechanic are they! cant even install a crank seal properly or my bet is it wasnt a recondtioned engine

I sense a deal being hatched here.

they were an audi specialist, the reconditioned engine came with paperwork that I still have somewhere,I have all the paperwork from the repairs I have had done. I have listed the car before on TM but it doesn't get any bites, so hence the question about selling to wreckers. I phoned wreckers today and their offers were low so I have decided to try it on Tm at a lower reserve. thanks for your help.

So its had a complete rebuild! What the wreckers are offering is all its worth sorry

Post a pic on your ad and I'm sure it will reach the $500 reserve. Good luck.

Licensed mechanic in Hamilton, I have the paper work somewhere, would have to dig it out, I should have taken it back when it developed the oil leak, but because we are in auckland I didn't get around to it( because of the trip), and had it looked at by mechanic in Auckland who says its the oil seal. Problem is that meanwhile its been sitting around for a year waiting to be fixed, hence the decision that probably better to let it go. I've decided to list it on TM as it must be of value to someoneis a great little car) and wreckers only wanting to pay my reserve price. Hopefully someone will spot it and repair it. Thanks.
