Good on ya, eftpos on the pump would be fantastic. The you are not held up by the coffee, muffin and pie fans waiting around inside clogging the lanes.

chris241, Jun 3, 4:32pm
F that i dont have the time for that carry on

crzyhrse, Jun 3, 4:35pm
Perhaps because they want you to go in there and impulse buy.

It never ceases to amaze me the crap that people buy from petrol stations.

crzyhrse, Jun 3, 4:36pm
I have the time. I'm just not going to waste it doing that.

johnf_456, Jun 3, 4:36pm
Reckon not to mention how over priced it is!

crzyhrse, Jun 3, 4:54pm
Looks like the survey is over.

LOL NOPE .had better things to do for a while.
So. things HAVE changed a lot in 25 years of pumping petrol.
I ran the graveyardFriday & Saturday nights shift for 1 year
Did another 3 years around different shifts at the same main road station.
Wife was 2ic manager at another station just up the road a bit at the same time as me.
That was about 6 years ago.
As the years moved along during our "time in service", things got increasingly worse with drive off's /abusive customers & even had that stations 1st armed robbery, (yea that was me being bashed around the head behind the counter).
With our past combined experience & recent news reports, it's not hard to know how bad the trouble can & has gotten at certain service stations these days to know exactly why Pre-pay is becoming the normal & manager preferred situation.

Also remember that franchise manager/owners can't setup pre-pay without head office's permission first.

yeh what happened to eftpos at pump anyway why did they get rid of it.i always got the impression noone really used it but that was in days before the dreaded pre pay.
prepay systemcan cause a little forecourt confusion.like when u pay for gas and by the time you get to the car some1 else has rolled up in the next lane and pumped your prepay gas.and when some1 has prepaid even though the pumps arent on prepay, not knowing you pick it up and get the amount they paid for and not the amount you wanted.

Pain in the ass if you ask me.

johnf_456, Jun 3, 5:24pm
Indeed it is, other parts of nz don't have it, its simply punishing everyone for the likes of a small minority that drive off.

mrfxit, Jun 3, 5:37pm
Think it through properly

What does it cost PER drive off, in.

Station time
Petrol cost
Police time
Court time
Any damage if the thief drives off WITH the pump nozzle
Attendant time (witness)
Administration time (in general)

vtecintegra, Jun 3, 5:39pm
Apparently Mobil Kilburnie cannot process prepay transactions of more than $100 so I was stuck putting $99 into my car.

Thats the only time prepay has really annoyed me.

mrfxit, Jun 3, 5:42pm
The 1st couple of generations of "Pre-pay at pump" systems were exactly that ,1st couple of generations.
They were not reliable, ppl bashed them because they didn't want to understand or couldn't be bothered.
PaknSave paved the way for acceptance of unattended pre-pay fueling stations, Countdown followed a bit later after watching PaknSave's system

Well its punishing the small actions of a few just like in anti helen days, it is un fair to treat everyone like criminals for the small actions of a few. In that same note you could try the same in a shop and say you can't look at this without paying for it. However 95% if not higher are genuine customers that pay your wages, but then again your loss. Has shown by people in here and most people I know they simple refuse to support pre pay gas stations. I often get customers coming from out of town and ask where is the nearest gas station that does not have pre pay at work.

So it goes to show people hate pre pay and it makes them loose business in my opinion the non pre pay ones I go to are always more busy than the pre pay one 3km up the road. Prepay is nothing but a waste of time.

stevo2, Jun 3, 5:43pm
exactly what I was getting at.

jason18, Jun 3, 6:01pm
I would agree with that. I dont really have a problem until now being asked to move my car to a different pump. Thats just a waste of my time. They lost out on a $137 dollar sale. I would have given my credit card happily for him to hold.

jason18, Jun 3, 6:02pm
To be honest tho this station in question must be one of the stations that has had the most armed robberies that I can remember

zephyrheaven, Jun 3, 6:09pm
I had never heard of this stuff till we got a rental in Auckland I stood there for ages trying to get the pump going - went inside & said "hey ya pumps are playing up Sanjay!!" to which he said I would have to pay before I filled the car - OK sweet, I want to fill it up - how much is that! He didnt know.

So I left

You fish islanders can keep that stuff, bugger that

richms, Jun 3, 6:11pm
Its not long ago that you couldnt even type in more than $99 into the pumps since they only had 4 digits and insisted on showing the cents that you couldnt input so were meaningless.

aragorn2003, Jun 3, 6:24pm
Went to the big BP in New Lynn one morning to fill up the work van , we have gas cards and isnt usually a problem on prepay pumps to fill up just show them the card and its all good

I was waiting for the pump to engage then after waiting for awhile i walked up showed the card to the guy through the window (was on night pay) and went back to the van and waited again for it to engage . Now being abit peeved off i go back and now he says he needs my card . Wtf never had that before and why make me wait why not say over the intercom the first time to hand over the card. Costs a hundy to fill and do it twice a week so thats afew hundy ill be taking somewhere else

johnf_456, Jun 3, 6:28pm
So true, their is the odd one that is not prepay thank god the local one 1km down the road is not prepay. My advice is to hurt them in the pocket and avoid them.

xs1100, Jun 3, 6:38pm
hahaha i dont do the pre pay either, even in my truck just roll up and start filling it,the one that makes me laugh is the attendants wait till im out filling up and then cleaning my windows or mirrors and then wander up and go " i ll look after it"

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 6:47pm
There has to be a better way, where the pump owners don't lose out so much to theft without the inconvenience. A lot of it comes down to inadequate policing which needs urgent attention anyway. But there must be a technology solution as well. Surely there is a better way to stop people driving off without paying.

tuttyclan, Jun 3, 6:53pm
Back in 2000 I was over in L.A and pulled into a service station. This was the first prepay I had come across. The guy at the counter asked how many gallons do you want.I wanted to just fill it up.The car was a rental and I could only estimate how many litres went into a gallon. So I had to pay first then pump the gas then go back inside to get my change.
I was a bit peaved by then, when I returned to my car I nearly got in the wrong side lol.

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 8:00pm
Try having two of your 4 cars being LHD, I still get caught out now and then and man do you feel silly. especially as there always seems to be someone watching.

gunhand, Jun 3, 8:07pm
NA, if ya quick you just twiddle with the mirror, like you were meant to do it lol.
