you're right, but they'd make for some funny videos.

Get over it. Its the way of life. You have to pay for your credit on your phone before you can text unless its contract which means you have to pay a monthly fee first anyway. Not much difference. I have no problem with prepay, I used to run a gas station (sole charge) when I was 16 and what a f--king mission (no such thing as prepay back then) but everyone was locals so no theifs. Then I went to Caltex (graveyard) and prepay system was in full swing. Boss lost about $300-$500 a week on driveoffs (dayshift) so they started bring it in earlier and earlier.unsure if 24/7 for them yet.

And that was nearly 6years ago (Caltex). And petrol was WAY cheaper back then.

Prepay on a cell is totally different, do share how you can prepay to do a complete fill when you don't know how much it will cost. Has said before, punishing everyone for the small actions of a few morons that we call human. When it could be fixed by swiping your card at the pump and also avoiding the food crowd inside the gas station.
Which is why myself and others I know avoid them like the plague their loss.

I had a similar experience in Tirakina once, called in to fill up and to find it was pay before you fill, when the officious owner said "how many litres do you want!", I said "I want to fill it up", and he said "YES, but how many litres do you want!", and I said "I don't want any now, stick it up your @rse" and went on to Wanganui!.

Last time I went to a prepay it was in my Caddy to fill-up it was a sunny Saturday morning, about 8:00am. The Indian with a VEY heavy accent over a poor quality speaker said something like "crackle.Woulddamanindag- oldcarcomeanpayfirst.crackl- e, crackle, crackle". I took the pump out of the car & rested it on top of the pump & drove off to my regular.

I dont mind if its prepay at the pump (not that any stations seem to have it anymore),I just go to my local station who always opens the pump for me. I cant stand stations where you have to line up twice behind everyone buying groceries.

LOL . mmmm yep agreed . Oh & welcome to the club ;-)
Never ever lost gas money on prepay, lost a bit on store thefts but never when the pumps were on prepay. Funny as hell 1 night at about 2AM (graveyard sole charge) where I had a guy come flying in with an old beaten up van demanding I open the Lpg pump for him to pump his OWN Lpg, THEN insisted he was an "on duty cop" going to a job, (NO badges/papers/uniform etc/ yes I DID ask for proof) made all sorts of threatening remarks & dumped the Lpg handle on the ground & wheel spun his way off the forecourt . up to the next station that wouldn't serve him Lpg either for the same reasons. Never heard anything back on that .

Simple really, I wont shop somewhere where I am treated as a potential criminal. It's fine by me if they don't want my business.Imagine being asked to pay at the door BEFORE entering the supermarket.

so why would you want to leave your credit card with someone you dont know or have never met and possibly will never meet him/her again, to go outside to pump your petrol, whats he/she doing with your card whilst you are gone.and dont effin well tell me it doesn't happen, i'm stating a fact here.

A very good point worth noting.

A lot of that is the banks fault for credit cards being so insecure. Whenever some tosser from the finance industry says that they are secure I just ask to have a look at their card and get out my phone to punch the details in. They always quickly snatch it back and agree that they aren't all that hot. Wish I had a photographic memory eh ;)

Staff abusing credit cards is pretty rare. Theres cameras all over the place plus Till records make it real easy to trace what happened. Credit card companys also have the "reverse credit" function for 30 days which make it easier to recover those funds. The 30 days limit only applys to STARTING an investigation. Yes it's another hassle we don't need but then again thats what you sign up for when you get a CREDIT CARD. If you hate the potential hassles so badly, then get a DEBIT CARD.

I can understand why they have gone to prepay (after all it saves the cost of staffing the place by the pumps), I hate it and only use prepay if the alternative is walking because the car is outa gas, and then I only put enough in to get to the next non prepay servo. If it is that much of a problem, bring back eftpos at pump.

Why should he need a debit card because of some moron petrol stations that want you to prepay, you should go down the south island and try find it. Most people know what stations have prepay and avoid them.
mrfxit,
Jun 5, 9:52am
LOL bunch of nit picking moaners
I don't give a toss if it's prepay or not as long as I get what I went there for & prepay at the pump gets me what I want a lot faster then lining up behind the counter.
johnf_456,
Jun 5, 9:53am
Prepay is a pain when filling it means you have to go back twice and not everyone likes been treated like a thief. How does it work out to be faster!
crzyhrse,

We're not talking about pre-pay at the pump. We're talking about having to queue twice just to fill the vehicle.

An inside view: At the BP I work at in central auckland, our end pumps that we can't see from the till were on permanent prepay for a long while; that is, even if we wanted to turn them on we couldn't. The rest were on on authorise mode which means we would turn them on only if you left your card/wallet or had a fuelcard.
However because we had so much abuse from the prepay system (and I agree it's a stupid waste of everyone's time) we no longer require customers to prepay - just remember to press the FILL button and pull the pump trigger and wait for us to authorise, which we usually do straight away.
The problem is our system takes a good 20-30s from when we turn them on until the fuel actully starts flowing.and people just don't have patience these days and think the damn pump isn't working or is on prepay. And for those who still insist on paying first we can't prepay more than $99 like every other gas station.
Regarding drive-offs we have a surveillance camera system that picks up number plates and matches them to a hotlist of repeat offenders. However it's not always 100% accurate on reading plates correctly.
Moral of the story is just put the pump in the car and most of the time the cashier will turn it on. Remeber we hate prepay as much as you do.
mrfxit,
Jun 5, 10:34am
LOL AND . like I give a S**t Even when doing prepay from the counter, it's about the same time frame as filling 1st & THEN going in to pay at the counter. You only need to do a double trip IF you insist on filling up fully, which yes it can be a pain if on a long trip BUT . then again, you 'should' be having reasonable size rest breaks on a big trip & that would help with it for sure.
The cases of some other customer picking up the wrong pump generally only happens with pump stations that have a SINGLE pump handle on the ends of the stand. Thankfully theres not many of those around these days. 95% or more of the big stations have ALL the pump handles on each SIDE of the pump stand which avoids that problem

Easy solution. LEARN how much you need by LOOKING at the fuel gauge . Yea sure it won't be a total fill but it's hardly going to matter for short trips around town or just out of town.
