Best place in CHCH to get a service!,due for trans flush also, thanks

fordguy17, May 30, 11:31pm
Has it got the 6 speed trans! If so, they are designed to NOT be flushed/serviced. Ring your Ford dealer, they will tell you this. But if it's the 5/4 speed auto any good quality outlet should be able to flush it for you although it could cost $200+ as they pump fluid through it until the fluid runs clean and then they seal it up. I would also recommend not taking it to a place like oil changers for your engine as the way they service the vehicles doesn't get all the old oil out and the new stuff they put in may not be as good as what is needed.

My FG ZF 6 speed was just serviced by Ford @ 90k, cost about $500!

andrac63, May 31, 3:09am
thanks for that, it is the 6 speed and it was ford dealership that told me that at 90000km service the trans has flush/service etc.i heard it's quite expensive but want it done for my own peace of mind.
Are there any generic problems with this model that I should ask mechanic to check while being serviced!,it is mk1 BF Fairmont Ghia 2006

tradingfreak360, May 31, 3:49am
The 6 speeds are pretty much bullet proof, being mk1 I think it would have a plastic sump/pan, I recommend you get it changed to the steel pan if they're not already fitting them when they do a service. Off the top of my head the BF2 Fairmonts/XR's came out standard with a steel pan.

The cost for a service and alloy!sumppan replacement when you add in the labour will be around the $2k mark. That will be not including platinum spark plugs that will be good! for 100k km supposedly.

thanks for advice all

andrac63, May 31, 11:16am
i think poster was referring to earlier post, plastic v metal pan

serf407, May 31, 7:51pm
The alloy pan to replace the plastic pan on the bf1, is around $800, for the zf 6hp26 six speed tiptronic.

andrac63, May 31, 9:30pm
was there a problem with the plastic pans!

robbo36, May 31, 11:07pm
The plastic pans in the BF1 were replaced in the BF2 and FG with steel because many were getting damaged in Aussie when owners ran over rocks, etc and smashed them. Also the cost of the plastic replacements are around $1k from Ford. Apparently, the plastic pans have the filters built into them, and at a service, the pan/filters unit are replaced as a single unit. The filters on the steel pan versions are separate and replaceable. By the way, the trans fluid at Ford is about $90 per litre. It is a Shell product, (can't remember the type off hand), and is about $30 per litre at an Auto Transmission service specialist. The transmission and cooler takes about 10 litres in total (not including amount used for flushing).

+1.I recommend you use genuine ZF fluid, I have heard of problems occurring like harsh gear changes when using an aftermarket transmission fluid in the 6 speed boxes.

tradingfreak360, May 31, 11:33pm
Personally I wouldn't push it that far for transmission service, My BF 6 speed has done 40,000kms and plan on doing a transmission service at 50-60,000km. "Sealed for life" yeah right.

chris_051, Jun 1, 8:38am
You would think ZF have learnt their 'sealed for life' claim is a load of shit. Look at all the late 1980s/early 1990s BMWs around with buggered ZF4 autos.

andrac63, Jun 1, 10:28am
what caused these failures!

unbeatabull, Jun 1, 10:37am
I would recommend my work being a Ford Dealer but Trademe probably won't like it.

6 Speeds generally drop pan, replace filter, and fill up. They use a different "Ford 6 Speed" Trans fluid which is quite expensive, whereas the 4/5 Speeds use a pretty common fluid and get a trans flush instead.

Also 90k is due for Diff Oil and Fuel Filter :)
