Try holding down the button to the right of the speedo, turn the ignition to ON, hold the button down until the service indicator goes blank.
Unless its a malfunction lamp, not a service light.if that's the case, you will need to go to a dealer or auto sparky to get the fault codes read. http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/9594/astra2o.jpg

It means a: you have a problem with your engine and a sensor has detected the fault. b: a sensor(s) has failed
astras are plagued with electrical problems best bet is to take it to a auto sparky. crank and cam sensors are the most common failure.

I noticed the gauge that tells you the temperature outside stopped working about a month ago,I didnt think it was a big deal. Holden Dealership/service repairs etc are 5 mins away so I may pop in there.

EGR valve problems are by far the most prevalent on late Astras defiantly followed by cam and crank sensors as Mat says. It??

This is usually a faulty crank or cam sensor - very common fault with Astra and Vectra's. Need to go to a Holden dealer and have it checked with diagnostic tester.
