johnf_456, Dec 18, 10:27am
+1 pick your timings all right

doug207, Dec 18, 11:25am
No you don't.

icemans1, Dec 18, 1:30pm
a trike is a bike with 1 training wheel

i-n-horz, Dec 18, 7:08pm
Hence the fact that they the cyclist should be contributing to the ACC levy in the form of a registration and followed by laws of visibility especially with cycles of such low height.I also ride a bicycle, own a vehicle and motorcycle so no predetermined prejudice here.

johnf_456, Dec 18, 7:12pm
+1 But apparently if you own a car like a lot seem to think it makes it ok. (sarcasm)

i-n-horz, Dec 18, 7:25pm
Maybe a school programme on safety/visibility should be compulsory to kids on their bikes, riding in structured groups with glo-vests and apon leaving school they then contribute to the system once they've learnt the law and why they maybe prosecuted for no helmet,glo-vest,lights etc.

i-n-horz, Dec 18, 7:27pm
^^^^leaving school for employment that is.

phillip.weston, Dec 18, 7:29pm
gadgetman is your trike hand operated by any chance! I saw a chap going southbound just north of Taupo last weekend on a hand operated trike thing but he had a vehicle behind him with flashing strobe lights etc.

trogedon, Dec 18, 7:51pm
As a keen Cyclist (as all the regulars know) I support your legal right to the road but; 1/ recumberants are low and hard to see ??

Probably Q/tn Jaffas, the driving habits around this area particularly in Q/tn and the Kawarau Gorge between Q/tn & Cromwell is 'B****DY" atrocious.
I drive trucks through there regularly and I'm always on the lookout, more so in the winter season when Subaru's & bigger 4WD vehicles are racing each other to get to the ski slopes before any other folks do.
Perhaps they think the snow might melt before they get there .who knows!
Well known fact down here .any 4WD with ski racks on em .look out as they generally drive like they ski.OUT OF CONTROL.
Going by the numbers of 4WD vehicles that get "totaled" in the area during winter the above statement would be inherently true!
I don't know what it is but a general madness seems to prevail around this area in winter and in the height of summer holidays where driving like there's no tomorrow takes over I'm afraid.
Geeeeez I hate those times of year but I drive through there way early in the morning when the idiots are still hopefully sleeping.

cyclists , or pedal trikes even , should have no danger from car drivers

that they do says a lot about us kiwis . car drivers have the OBLIGATION to make sure cyclists are safe

NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND!

gibler, Dec 19, 1:25am
man you are brave ( a death wish really)biking around Queenstown . the roads are just far too dangerous around the gorge areas. And the tourists drive on the wrong side of the road a lot.

rsr72, Dec 19, 3:11am
And stay clear of the lycra, folks.

Your just Jealous.

gadgetman, Dec 19, 6:50am
No it is not. I am paraplegic but recovered in such extend that I can walk on sticks and use my feet for pedaling.
I had my co-driver behind me about 100 metres with hazard lights on when I was going downhill on my trike from the top of Crown Range to Cardrona pub.
I felt the was a problem for some drivers as some bugger decided to overtake my van and then me on one go. Safer to be on my own I guess. I will pull over when it is safe.

gadgetman, Dec 19, 6:59am
I am fully aware of that. I lived in Queenstown before my paragliding accident. Then I did not have a car but cycled everywhere. Never had an accident with bicycle except couple falls when on the mountain biking tracks.
I am thinking about kayaking and rafting on the Kawarau River. Of course I need to avoid Nevis Bluff and take the less dangerous option of the road instead of river.
My challenge is to go from Bluff to Cape Reinga on human, wind power or down the river. From Queenstown to Wanaka I might take the steep Crown Range Road.

gadgetman, Dec 19, 7:07am
From Queenstown to Frankton I can take the coastal track which is used only by bicycles and pedestrians. I used that to go to work when I lived in Queenstown. Nice track and no cars.
The Cromwell Gorge is a concern so I might take the high road over Crown Range. I need slower gears to grind up that hill. 800 Metres elevation on 9km distance and then nice downhill mainly all the way to Wanaka. There is a track from Arrowtown past the zig zag on Crown Terrace but I am not sure if that is suitable for my trike going uphill!

gadgetman, Dec 19, 7:17am
I do not take the safety for granted and I need to be alert at all times.
I was talking to a Harley rider today at Kingston Tavern and I can appreciate the dangers the motorcyclists face. On a motorcycle you have higher speed and some car drivers pull over from the side roads unexpectedly. I have two flags on my flag pole and today I used the red flasher on my helmet and another on the rear carrier.
I got plenty of room from all vehicles today and twice pulled to the ditch as I saw cars coming both ways. Busy day on the road as there is that Milford traffic as well. Most of the time i am on my own but Murphy's Law of bicyclists states that if you ride along long stretch of a highway and there are two cars coming the opposite directions, they meet exactly where you are cycling! And I never wear any MP3 player when I am cycling.

gadgetman, Dec 19, 9:06am
Now that second pic is funny, lol.
No lycra here but just comfy pants and long sleeved loose shirt to keep sun away from burning my skin.
I could wear some mask perhaps so I would not need any sun cream.

zephyrheaven, Dec 19, 9:13am
I like my bikes, motored & not - i wouldnt ride a pushie on NZ roads if you paid me these days - too many mangled corpses sorry to say

If you need to prove something - a low slung B train target on SH1 isnt going to cut it

gadgetman, Dec 19, 9:40am
There are always accidents. If you want to avoid accidents one way is to stay home in the suburbs and then be afraid of home invasion.

To avoid road accidents I could take on sailing, then there are the hazards of storms. I could cheat perhaps and pretend that I have ridden my trike. Bluff you way to Cape Reinga. Nah, I do things the hard way. And hope to raise money for Spinal Injury Trustin the process.

I think gadgetman is correct in stating a vehicle is not allowed to pass a vehicle 'while that vehicle is passing another'. but proving it is like finding hens teeth. I commend you for having mirrors & I wish all push/pedal/hand bikes had them on the open road. I wear a high vis vest when on the motorbike - I've got a spare or two - can I give you one when you are in chch!
