Not everyone is as clever as you!

Honestly, its not hard, you can do it ! Break it down into small steps and practice practice practice. LOL

Hi Taipan,
Sorry I know pretty much nothing about the 406 so really can't help you much. What I would suggest is perhaps talking to a third party parts importer/peugeot specialist garage and asking what goes wrong with them, what it costs to fix and anything you should look for on one.
Thats usually my first step when considering a vehicle I don't know anything about. That and jumping on the international messageboards for that make and asking a few questions.
I find if you ask nicely its amazing how much info some of those mechanics etc are happy to give away!

Also, there may be one or two on here that have delt with them. Top marks on thinking outside the square. This is potentially the kind of thing that will give you a LOT of car for very little coin, just do your research as not every non-mainstream car is a worthwhile proposition.

Best of luck!

It looks nice but its just your average sedan under the skin.

I wouldn't buy an auto one as they have an extremely poor auto box

Snap! Was just looking at one of those myself actually. Google says the 2L is a tad slow for it's weight but relatively economical. The interior has been called bland by Fifth Gear but the leather Recaros are rated extremely comfortable if a little lacking in side support for sporty driving. The 3L V6 seems to suffer coil issuesbut otherwise owners don't report any other problems. The manual gearboxes are often hard to select reverse and sometimes 1st so watch for this. The diesel model seems like a surprise package with 50mpg and heaps of torque for relaxed cruising but lacking in sportiness. Dunno if any diesel 406 Coupes made it to NZ. European owners find the 3L V6 fast but a little thirsty - if you commute by public transport like me it won't be much of a problem. Cars made after the facelift in 2000 seem to be far better built. If its a V6, look for an engine number including 4JS rather than 4J - the 4JS is the facelift model with 210bhp v 190bhp in the earlier models.

I tend to stay well away from French cars but the Pininfarina designed 406 Coupe (reminiscent of the Ferrari 456) is one car I've always been intrigued by. A well maintained example shouldn't be a major money-pit.

True. However the automatic boxes on the V6 engine do have a stellar reputation for shitting out. Evidence of this can be seen in the disproportionately high number of auto 406/607s that pop up here on TM for sale "as-is" because the auto has 'gone'. And because the 406 is getting on a bit now, IMO your safest bet is to skip the auto box entirely and get a manual instead for a better driving experience and lower any failure risk.

Now the 4-cylinder autos which the OP is talking about have been used in a much wider variety of vehicles so if in the unlikely event of needing a replacement unit you're going to have better chances of finding one for the 4 cylinder engine.
