Too true, I did the same thing from Welly 3 weeks ago.Most cost effective way really, stayed in Picton the night I brought car over on the Interislander, super smooth trip on the day too. The big plus was I enjoyed the trip from Picton to Central Otago the next day all day, well 10.5 hours driving with several breaks in there as well.
