Why do people indicate when they

It's the ones that exit the round about with the right indicator still going that make me wonder.

fryan1962, Apr 3, 7:27pm
you indicate on exit problem is some roundabouts are so small, even on that web page they acknowledge that

smac, Apr 3, 7:32pm
The reason some people indicate right when entering a round about (even though they're going straight through) is the same reason this thread went 27 posts without the posters being able to agree whether or not they agree or disagree.

ema1, Apr 3, 7:48pm
Correct. .indicate your intention to exit a roundabout just before the exit you plan going out on, that includes exiting a roundabout even if you aren't changing direction effectively, that lets folks heading towards you know that you are exiting.
If going past around the point where those other folk entering need to give way to traffic in the roundabout,it's prudent to indicate the fact especially if you are going around past more than two exit points.
It's good to be informed of other drivers intentions rather than taking a pot luck guess.

There's one or two small ones in Queenstown that you don't actually deviate when going through and hardly ever do you see anyone indicate on exiting on the "straight through" situation but most do indicate when going left at a 90deg exit and indicate right when either going around 270deg or going right round 360deg and exit the way they entered and using the left indicator just before exiting, in both cases.

Are they meant to be round abouts!I thought they were simply painted circles in the middle of the road.I never need to deviate when going through those intersections, and if I tried to obey the law and indicate for 3 seconds before leaving, I would have to stop in the middle of the intersection.

pico42, Apr 4, 12:18am
You are entirely correct and this has been the officially promoted and accepted practice since at least 1991.

However, the actual legislation said differently and this "oversight" was corrected about 3 years ago. Unfortunately many people heard the media say "law change" and promptly changed from what they were already correctly doing.

pico42, Apr 4, 12:20am
The give way signs and roundabout signs are there to tell you that, yes, this is a roundabout and you should act accordingly.

tigra, Apr 4, 9:08am
Dont think the idiots in Wellington decided this at all.You are only required to indicate when you are leaving the roundabout

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 4, 9:57am
Actually it was idiots like you who misinterpreted the rules. You don't indicate right if going less than half way around.

bellky, Apr 4, 10:00am
Too right!

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 4, 10:03am
That's because they didn't want all the twits who'd always been doing it wrong to feel bad about themselves. But most were never doing it correctly anyway, just like today.

lady71, Apr 4, 10:57am
Agree something has to be done. One of the problems out on the road is no patience and also drivers that should not be on the road as have no license, just watch some of the tv programmes how many don't have a license. Hence we may never solve the problem. Also would love to know where in the road code it tells you that it's correct to straighten out a two lane round about as you are bigger than the cars in the lane already. Have had two near misses in the last week with a 4wd vehicle cutting over the top of me, I ended up on the round about both times as no where else to go.

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 4, 11:08am
That's just those incompetent drivers again. I bet that driver even had a licence and was driving an insured, WoFed & licenced vehicle.

elect70, Apr 4, 1:28pm
Lot of the oldeisesp femalesjust indicate every time they move from the straight ahead .thinking because they are moving left they should indicate .

therafter1, Apr 4, 1:34pm
Because they don't have a clue what they are doing so they are trying to cover their stoopid backsides lol

skin1235, Apr 4, 3:50pm
you do realise that the indicators are on the outside of your vehicle, therefore not there for your benefit but for the benefit of others approaching or behind you, put there so you can 'indicate' to them your intentioned direction of travel

I get the indicate when exiting
I ask why do you not indicate an intended left at the first exit it would enable anyone waiting on that entry to go ahead - currently they sit shivering in anticipation until you turn away before you get to them, and thus conversely indicate a right at entry then a left at your exit - it would at least let others know what your intention is surely, and thats what indicators are for, not just pretty lights on the dash or an annoying noise disrupting the sounds

skin1235, Apr 4, 3:52pm
but naturally all others on the road are only there to get in your way, if you can keep them guessing and confused for as long as possible you must be winning, right, winner

lk104, Apr 4, 4:33pm
Had a mate that tried to get in for a look. Not happening. You can't get near the place.

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 4, 4:37pm
Ya what now!

marcos1, Apr 4, 4:40pm
Are you sure you have posted in the thread that you meant to!

lk104, Apr 4, 6:28pm
Oops, how did that happen, sorry.

headcat, Apr 4, 6:34pm
Probably for the same reason that they indicate a right turn when coming to the end of a passing lane.

lk104, Apr 5, 6:00am
Yeah, havent worked out that one either, you're not changing direction.

smac, Apr 5, 6:17am
On that theory you wouldn't indicate changing lanes either.
