My car failed its warrant on left rear braker caliper leaking brake fluid, Put in straight into the mechanic who said it was an internal leak and sent it away somewhere, Can anyone hazard an idea of cost for fixing this as pretty anxious as just spent $2300 on another car repair and the bank account sill trying to recover, thanks heaps . Oh the mechanic went home and didnt call me which is why I couldnt ask them (lol)_

Why don't you ask the mechanic! Best to do so BEFOREHAND too BTW.

$200 roughly. But, I would rather get a second hand one for $20 odd.

I did asked the mechanic I rang at 2.45 he said would ring the place and find out repair cost and get back to me, I rang again at 4.45 as hadnt heard and he had left and is away tomorrow YAY so thats why I dont know but $200 doesnt seem too bad would that be labour as well ta

The usual reason they leak is because of bad internal corrosion, sometimes they can't be fixed by cleaning them out and fitting new seals. Second hand ones are often a dodgy proposition at best for this reason, likewise its why they usually get outworked to brake specialists for repair or sometimes exchange fo recon ones. Only they can give a price for a long lasting repair.

Remember to change brake fluids every 24 month or you end up with stuff like that.

Fark!

Yep +1

You don't sound like greasemonkey OP . but get a second hand one and don't pay anymore than $20 - $30 for one. Get a little bottle of brake fluid and you must have someone in your family/extended family/friends who knows how to swap a caliper over. Give them a hand to bleed the brakes and you're done. When you get the caliper - make sure you get them to agree that if it leaks or proves to be unservicable . they'll take it back and give you one that does work. None of this stuff is rocket science matey :)) and for a pro - its money for jam. Keep your dosh and do it yourself.

god just came back to revise the cost when hubby picked it up it was $595! No I am not mechanical and neither is my husband, they said $190 each for the reconditioning the rest is GST and labour, brake fluid etc. Are you guys saying I been ripped off cos if so wont go back to that mechanic

intrade, Apr 11, 4:16am
na sounds about right if it was done correct. You should get the car serviced correctly like brake fluids and coolant from emgine need change every 24 month or you end up with repair bills like this.
