Its an automatic, when I turn the key, something makes a whirring sound then nothing.Last week it would the same thing but would eventually start on the 5th or 6th attempt.
Anyways, do u think its a mechanical or electrical problem!

andrea_w, Jul 10, 8:17am
.and the car is!

therafter1, Jul 10, 8:17am
Is the whirr followed by a clunk !

therafter1, Jul 10, 8:18am
Oh, and it could be either or both lol

itsirk, Jul 10, 8:26am
Its a mitsibishi mirage.

Wow thanks for all yr answers.

ETA: I dont think theres a clunk after the whirring.

gunhand, Jul 10, 8:30am
It went "zip" when it moved and "bop" when it stopped
And "whirr" when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

This will test ya age lol.

If it is a light whirr starter not engaging

if heavy whirr.you maybe out of petrol as engine is turning but not firing

itsirk, Jul 10, 8:35am
Showing yer age LOL

itsirk, Jul 10, 8:36am
So starter motor! Is that mechanical or electrical!

fryan1962, Jul 10, 8:38am
it is electrical starter motor, as it spins it throws a gear out to turn motor over

itsirk, Jul 10, 8:41am
Thanks everyone for yr mechanical/electrical expertise!

Sounds Irish to me.

gunhand, Jul 10, 9:02am
Admit it, you know lol.

bigfatmat1, Jul 10, 9:04am
if its a whir it could be the drive on the starter motor it uses a 1 way clutch system when this fails it engages but wont turn the engine it will just slip. It is a job for a a auto sparky.

oramac, Jul 10, 9:04am
Who, me!

gammelvind, Jul 10, 9:09am
Has been a day or 7 since I heard that one on the wireless, while talking to friends on the party line, with the Humbers aerial covered in those round plastic drink containers (forgot their name dammit)

itsirk, Jul 10, 9:14am
That just went right over my head. Where does one find an auto sparky!

oramac, Jul 10, 9:19am
Ask people you know to recommend one, or try the yellow pages.

itsirk, Jul 10, 9:23am
Ah, thanks!

Just out of curiosity, is there no one you know that is into cars, that could have a look at it for you!

itsirk, Jul 10, 9:27am
No we are a family of teachers and nurses :-)

gunhand, Jul 10, 9:37am
OH, well treat medicly then.
Safely approach the car
See if it responds
Check it airway (aircleaner)
Is it breathing! (starting)
And if not it wont have circulation (of fuel)
So it now pulseless with no output of anykind.aystole.
Through a life pack across the terminals and give it 300 x 3 and see what happens.

itsirk, Jul 10, 9:44am
Now that I can make sense of :-)

gunhand, Jul 10, 9:46am
LOL, all sorted then for you.Maybe a shot of adrenalin would help as well.

Not sure how you would do CPR though.Maybe a pre cordial thump may make it go.
