I have my heart set on buying one of these but have been advised by salesmen in varies yards not to touch them with a barge pole as expensive and hard to get parts. Advice please. :)

I do know some folks who have had good runs with only basic maintanace required but also know of a few cars that have been absolute lemons. One required a new auto at 55000km and the cost was outrageous.
My advice shop very carefully

Berg I am looking at ones that have had the cambelts done etc etc. They are not that common to buy really so I wonder if people keep them cos they are good, OR the car dies and never to be seen again. I am currently driving a holden and selling it to put towards my new car. Ohhh. so confusing.

If you realy want one then buy one, but be aware that it will cost you more to maintain than an avearge japper or aussie.

For what reasons do you want one! They aren't a particularly well designed or manufactured vehicle, and not very practical. Overall reliability and running costs have been a lottery depending on who you talk to.

If you find one you like have it very carefully checked by a VW specialist. I know of one car parted out because it wasn't viable to repair at just over 100,000km. Not sure if it was NZ new or an import

I know a lady in napier that has one and she absolutly loves it, because its so different(looks),she's had it a couple of years with no problems, but who knows long term, I myself would only have the original one, but thats me, good luck to you in your quest.

I've got one, only issue so far was a coil pack needed replacing. Its done 160,000kms and still runs fine, it uses no water or oil. They certainly aren't an exciting car to drive though.

They're a bit of a cult car, and OK, I guess, but you're paying top dollar for the appearance.
I'd sooner go for a Golf, frankly.

Always check the headliner, the fabric always falls down(common fault on VW/Audi cars),but its not too expensive to get it recovered(you cant reglue the old fabric back up)
