some cars have ballast resistor or relay to give more power on starting
could be a fault here, although this car may be too "modern"

jae9, Jul 23, 6:00am
ok utube that too.

I'd tend to agree with TRH, especially if it's a distributor ignition engine which I would imagine it would be of that year, as Honda's are absolutely shocking for burning out the igniter/module inside the Dizzy.

Hard to tell without actually looking & testing it though

ok, husband home
auto choke, we put crc over the colouredfuse box by the battery.
turned key
it ran, then conked out
then hissing noise came out.
BUT prior to that when turn the key on and the car ran it gave a burst of power, then went low then.

sounds like cancer

Get a mechanic to look at it

jae9, Jul 23, 6:52am
there is a short around the ignition control module. it seems to be shorting

ok electrical we can't do, mechanic needed.

jae9, Jul 23, 6:53am
before it cuts out we can hear, like a shorting/ crackling/ticking sound, maybe shorting.
dammit

splinter67, Jul 23, 6:54am
go to an auto electrician that's where the mechanic will send you

My prelude used to do the same, faulty ignition switch.

wotz_it_2_ya, Jul 23, 7:39am
Isn't that the Honda dry joint in the ignition relay - no power to the fuel pump. When you turn the key listen carefully. Should be 2 small clicks. Only 1 means fuel relay not tripped. Give the dash a good bash underneath and try again.

peekaboo4u2, Jul 23, 8:05am
here's a link about the main ignition relay. don't think the carb version have these though but if your cars injected then that's where id be checking too. good luck

Honda were among the first to get rid of ballast resistors in the early 80's. No Civic from '91 will have one.

If the car is carburettored, especially if it is twin carb, I would check for faulty fuel cutoff solenoid.

motorboy2011, Jul 23, 9:09am
thats another fault they are bad for, fuel pump relay, the big brown one on the steering column. My other honda had that prob lol!

snoopy221, Jul 23, 9:13am
YIP

elv, Jul 23, 9:21am
+2

Or the fuel pump

motorboy2011, Jul 23, 9:33am
From what I have heard though, that brown relay causes hard re-starts, rather than making the car stop while running. Mine was especially bad trying to re-start after filling up after getting petrol. Hitting all the solder joins inside the relay sorted it on mine, even though the joins looked fine anyway

jae9, Jul 23, 9:39am
don't think its Fuel pump because the light is showing up on the dash

jae9, Jul 23, 9:40am
car is not carburettored, it is fuel injected.(auto)
