Why does a BMW 740i ,zf5hp19 trans have to have 24dolla a litre atf!can you use DEXRON 3 !thanks to any EUROphiles!

That's cheap. Some auto trans oils cost $100 / litre.

Transmission fluid is now part of the 'design' of the transmission so you need the correctfluid for a particular transmission. It is no longer 'as long as it is red and has enough of it, it will work'.

I am not a BMW expert and don't know what year has that transmission but I think off hand that at least some 740's do run a fairly regular fluid. I would advise jumping on the Castrol lube guide and seeing what is recommended for your year. Generally they will just refer you to the dealer if it really has to have a genuine fluid, and if that's the case I strongly recommend you follow the advice. (although checking on a BMW forum may show you that the genuine fluid is also available from whichever company makes it for BMW cheaper)

Make sure you use a Filtran brand filter(OEM)
