lowering the cost of bikes to ACC can be achieved by making car drivers use their eyeballs

you really want to lower the cost of ACC on the country !

stop patching up drunks & rugby players

Sorry, but I'm not a "defenceless" rider. My "defences" are my experiences and skills to place myself in positions to NOT get taken out. Yep "shit happens" and car/truck drives, cyclists and pedestrians will continue to try and take you out on a motorbike but a good "defensive" riding style helps. Mrs Berg has done almost 30,000kms since she got her new bike in Feb without too many close calls and her "defensive" riding practices saved her when those close calls occurred. That's riding in Wgtn traffic plus touring plus weekend scratching. If it was that dangerous and she was totally defenceless I wouldn't let her do it.

I think every1 is wide awake but it is sad to know that some1 has died on the road. If that comment had been made to you after you had just lost a friend how would you react ! . Would you see a funny side to it. I wouldn't.

Given fatal crashes involving motorcycles are inevitably cheaper than serious injury from an ACC point of view, that gives rise to the question "why are the costs of the injury crashes being disproportionately placed on ACC levies for the victims"!

3tomany, Dec 2, 7:44am
Not sure why you are so offended by that statement, although under the circumstanses it is insencitive the fact remains that every rider who straps on a helmet knows the risk but does it because they love riding fully aware things can go bad no matter whos at fault the rider will come of second best

The pie (mmmmm pie) chart on page 4. and the text below, although it's not verbatim and has certainly been spun.

the-lada-dude & berg .

I suspect that the statement & WORD of "defenseless" is much more related to the fact of a lack of physical defensive systems in/on a motorbike when compared to a car/truck/bus /train (which any of the former, when clobbered by, may as well be a train)

mrfxit, Dec 2, 8:11am
Oh shut up about pies . now you've made me want my 2nd breakfast ;-(

I pass as many cars etc as I can if I catch up with them. And its surprising just how many you do catch up on sticking to the speed limit.I would rather be in front so then at least I know I have been seen and also I can now see much further ahead to see what fait may be awaiting. If you know how to judge cars/drivers you can save yourself quite often by looking ahead.
And plenty of cars pass me, I just let them go and 9 times out of 10 they get stuck behind a truck so you re pass anyway.
On a bike you just do not get held up the same as in a car.
I aslo have seen riders behave in such a manner that will surely be there downfall. I no longer ride in large groups due to the amount of small penises amoungst them. They wanna die thats fine just leave me out of it.
Also you have the phenomenon of car drivers looking into your eyes and still pull out. Never trust anyone.
I do consider myself at risk when I ride due to lack of protection but if your ahwere of your enviroment you can decrease the risk.
And sometimes shit just happens if your in a car bike, truck or plane.
I could choke on my lunch and die today but I wont stop eating in case that may happen, however to minamize the risk I chew it properly.

jason18, Dec 2, 9:02am
Hellllll Yeah!

splinter67, Dec 2, 9:10am
They where awesome now back to the subject at hand lol

sw20, Dec 2, 9:12am
Oh the single vehicle accidents! Those are the ones where the car runs the bike off the road and the car never even notices or doesn't want to notice so they carry on!

mrfxit, Dec 2, 9:16am
For sure, yep of course.
A very high chance theres no one to blame apart from the van driver.
From that last news story, the driver was simply an accident waiting to happen.
It's a wide corner with reasonable visibility as you go around & even coming from the side road, it's still a reasonable amount of visibility BUT . if you are flying, then theres no real hope of reacting enough in time to avoid spinning off or getting slammed.
This was even more complicated by the apparent facts that the van went around several vehicles to get on to the main road & being on the wrong side of that exit to main road would have pushed the van over even further.
