just clicks otherwise had starter motor checked doesnt work any better with jumper leads should i still clean battery terminals to make sure. Its auto and theres a click by the lever that changes gear sometimes is there an earth to the auto transmission to check somewhere. turns over better after its been driven and started straight away 3rd turn of key and then 1st turn of key.

but hey, some idea of make and model may help it does sound like whoever checked the starter motor needs checking too
or does it actually try to wind over if you jiggle the gear stick - what happens if you put it in N before trying

Starter contacts or solenoid. These earth through the earth brush of the starter motor so it could be worn earth brushs

Could still be a faulty solenoid in the starter working okay on a warm day when contacts fitted. Suggest you refer problem back to the shop that did the starter motor contacts- preferably leave them the car overnight so they can see the problem when it is present on first start cold edited to add could be worn brushes also - starter may not have been stripped fully when contacts done.

check the earth strap from the engine back to the battery or to a body part, make sure it is tight and has good contact clip one of your jumperleads to the battery neg and the engine

Tired battery, try replacing the battery rather than using jumper leads.

Before you get carried away try Splinters post at # 12 as it can be a common fault. Instead of quickly turning the key to the start position, turn it very slowly as the key barrel can be worn and it is possibly turning past the contact points in the switch.

you'd need a suby owner who knows where the inhibitor switch is, some are on the box, some are on the shift, it's not unknown for then to stuff out
easi way to check is get a short piece of wire and bridge the battery connection and the solenoid connection at the starter motor, if it tries hard every time you bridge it ( leave ignition turned off) then the issue is in one of the switches, either ignition key or inhibitor
make sure you have the ignition turned off - if you're head down under the bonnet and it starts, and is in gear, it's either going to try to run you over or run away from you

although your first post says it clicks - that indicates the solenoid is actually pulling in, and it cannot do that if you have a faulty switch clicking indicates an issue in the starter, either it has poor battery, or poor connectiions or the dude that fixed it needs a rocket
