The latter I'd say, especially given that he was DIC at the time. And nobody was belted in, except the security guy. Who was the only one that lived. And this gets to the crux of this - these stats are largely meaningless. Most accidents are caused by bad driving - inattention, incompetence, drunkeness, txting.

Any car - any car at all, like a 64 Chev Corvair or the above mentioned Mitsubishi L300 van - is a far safer proposition to drive or be driven in by a competent, focused and above all attentive driver than anything modern or old driven by someone, drunk, txting and/or otherwise stupidly inattentive.

Cars are now as good as they realistically can be, the roads even in NZ are not too far behind for the most part. What needs fixing now is the drivers
