Importing a car from Australia.

Anyone know the cost of importing a car ? Then do they just have to be VIN inspected to get on the road?

tamarillo, Feb 15, 12:10am
Nope, there is all the info you need online at, I think, vtnz site. Google is your friend, it lays it all for you. Imported cars go through a much more vigorously process that has caught some out, newly restored old cars have had to be pulled apart so they can see repairs. Not saying that happens all the time but have seen it happen.
It also has to have approval for NZ. If it's a standard car no worries but if it's rare you'll need type approval I think it's called. Left hand drive is only ok for older cars or need exemptions.
Basically Google it, there is too much involved to say here and you need the full picture.
Is there a reason you'd want to? Not usually worth it unless it's rare or special to you.

It's all on the NZTA website. All vehicles imported to NZ have to meet all the requirements for emissions etc, regardless from where they are imported, unless they fall under one of the few exceptions, which are rare. Generally speaking, as tamarillo says above, importing from Aussie is too difficult and too expensive, and if the car doesn't meet the requirements here (or be covered by exception) it can't be complied. Here is the info you need from the NZTA website: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/importing/index.html

Looking at importing a 73 statesman, any idea of shipping costs?

vjregal770, Feb 15, 6:38am
Call a shipping company. I've used Jenners to ship a car from the US, they were very good. They will email you a breakdown of all costs eg, MAF, Customs, etc etc

I recently priced shipping a new Izuzu MU X, from Brisbane to Auckland. $2300, for shipping,,,,very reasonable, A Statesman would maybe be a little bit longer in the body, but i think it wouldn`t be much different, remember there is GST to pay on the vehicle price, plus shipping cost. being a 2nd hand vehicle, there could be extra cleaning costs too. I priced with Jenner Freight, who have previously bought two vehicles from the USA for me, they were excellent, they specialise in doing this.

henderson_guy, Feb 15, 6:59am
Since they sell the Mu-X new in NZ, I'd say that there's a good chance that one from Aus would comply.

The majority of Australia to New Zealand used vehicle (i.e. not a new car made in Australia) roll-on roll-off (RORO) shipping is handled by Autohub Logistics, based in Kumeu, Auckland. You could also talk to Dolphin Shipping in Parnell, and also Jacanna Customs and Freight in Te Atatu South.

Believe it or not, Australia is now the second largest country of origin for imported vehicles entering New Zealand!

Just got to watch out for the flood, hail and fire damaged repaired ones.

kazbanz, Feb 15, 8:50am
If its qa NEW mu then it will be fine. 2010 and Newer Mu's pass euro 4

Yes, although the hail damaged ones sold in Brisbane for close to retail pricing! Crazy- you wouldn't even get a look in on those.

I'm off tomorrow morning (Monday) on the red-eye for another Australian battle. sigh.
