the 191 corona is a great choice, but i reckon that its equal would be the 2.0l telstar/626 of the mid 90's (not the v6 XRI model)

Well how about this one. We bought a cheapo '94 Corolla from wife's business for $350. That was its residual book value (not retail value!). It had 390,000 km on it at that time. It used to travel between Hawera and Auckland twice a week with the company and had been regularly serviced mind you and never had anything but tyres filters etc done in that time. We used it as a real hack for about a year and a half then on sold it to our son with 430,000 kms on it. He used it and then decided to put a turbocharger on it. then on sold it a couple of years ago. It is STILL going strong although it seems to get new tyres more often these days and with the current owner than when we ever had an interest in it. It still has had no problems and is now up to 480,000 kms. Unbreakable!

True, those early 1.6 laser's were pretty good too (mazda essentially). The old corolla 4af engines were very good too, I have known a couple well into the late 300k's, all original.

2.4lt early 90's Hilux diesel. Mates brother bought one brand new in early nineties, sold it to his brother around 2000 with 300,000km on the clock and motor/box and clutch having had nothing done to them. Its now done between 700 and 800,000km and it had a clutch done. That is all.

The DX Corolla, with the 4K engine and a 4 speed box. Bullet proof, oops- but then there is the rust. Maybe the 1988 Mitsi V3000 5 Speed, 500,000k no problem, if it has been serviced every 10,000k.
