performance? A big deal or not worth it?

Both.

Dual VVTi offers better economy and better performance.
Re is it worth it .To be honest its more a case of "its wot its got"
By going to Newer Toyotas for example they become DVVTi as a matter of course.

Performance and economy is really a side benefit, dual as opposed to single VVTi's primary purpose is emission control. it enables much or all of the function of an external EGR system to be conducted internally with the right valve overlap. Cheap, reliable (if on a constant diet of clean high quality oil) and very much favoured these days.

As Kaz says the newer Toyotas are dual, for example the 4 litre 1GR-FE DOHC V6 went dual in 2009 and power jumped from 177 kW to 213 kW and torque went up from 377 Nm to 392 Nm. Reportedly fuel consumption also improved slightly.

More power from same engine . As revs climb the cam timing &/or lift increases giving more power . Before ,we used to instal a hot cam to get more power but made less power low revs & idled bad , VVTI gives the best of both .
