Transit campervan revving high?

opke, Nov 24, 3:45pm
Hi there, yesterday we purchased a 1999 transit campervan. When travelling at 90kms it is revving just over 3000rpm which seems and sounds high to me? Any ideas. Thanks

Change up a gear.

Don't know about Transit but my Canter revs about 3000 at 90 kmh.

Its a commercial truck designed to move a heavy load with a low power engine. it's not going to be like a car.

That's normal for those, if you think the clutch is slipping a bit by all means get it checked, assuming its manual of course.

There are at least two diff ratios available for them

We hired one in the South Island - comfy cruising till it broke down. The replacement one was just as you describe.

The hire owner said that there were different ratios available.

that thing 99 probably till -99 technology . is a dinosaur in technology and thats what they all did if you had a mazda camper then you would write you can only do 40kph up hills.
thats what they did only commonrail diesel will move a camper like it was a car unless you have a massive mother of a diesel engine like my 2,8 mercedes ssangyoung is not pulling to bad for a non turbo. pulls better then any non electronic japanese diesel with turbo.

joke's on me here! , Hired a furniture truck that you could still drive on a car license. Quick instructions as i climbed in. Got to Wanganui [from palmy] & accidentally found 5th gear leaving a round about lol--nearly stalled it in it's tracks it did. Didn't go any faster on the way home & had to change down for the hills. 90kph was about it, maybe was governed but don't think so. Did the job well but remember thinking gosh Wanganui's a long way today. Think by memory it was a Toyota something--diesel & redlined [or was it a green line] at only about 2500 [doesn't sound right, does it?], & red line at about 3000. Was a while ago.

Well, we hired a Mitsubishi 6-berth camper back in 1999 for a South Island tour. Low gear was so low it was never needed. At 80 km/h (I forget what revs) the racket was so loud our ears are still ringing - 1 hour at a time was enough. Handling very poor - only advantages over a 1950 Bedford would have been the better fuel consumption, power steering and synchromesh. Definitely just a round-town delivery truck chassis.
In contrast our now grown-up son tells me a modern Mercedes Benz camper he recently hired was a dream to drive!

Thanks everyone. We have had it in at a transmission specialist today and it isn't changing out of 3rd gear (it's an automatic) and apparently it is going to cost a minimum of $3500 to replace/repair the transmission. So disappointed.

Did your PPI not pick that up? That's poor form.

Oh dear thats hard, but frankly welcome to the world of Transit ownership. I drive a 2006 as a daily drive, fortunately I don't own it and work pays for the continuous repair saga. Not much left that hasn't been replaced at least once in just under 400k of traveling. Working in the panel and paint trade, there are just so many of those pre 2000 tranys having huge amounts of rust removed, so much that it is starting to be a bit difficult finding suitable non rusty second hand replacement panels. Hopefully you didn't pay to much as unless you are very lucky you will be spending more money.

There is a lot to be said for the truck chassis motorhomes like Mitsi, Isuzu and Iveco. They might be a bit slower, but they're built to last.

consumer guarantees act?

I would have thought a transmission not going into the overdrive gear would have been very obvious on a test drive?

opke, Nov 26, 9:55am
We didnt test drive it, was shipped up to us in the north island from the south on good faith after being told no mechanical problems. But at this stage we are in discussion with them about compensation :/. Hope it turns out well. Yep wish we could afford something other than a transit now after reading/hearing about their problems lol. Live and learn I guess.

And you believed them? They are amongst the last vehicles that should be bought without an expert PPI given they are built cheap in UK to be thrown away after five years and most have done a zillion km by a zillion different drivers if ex rental by now. Everyone ditches those because of rust setting in, weird electric issues, gearbox/clutches on the way out, automatics that have been overheated, or equally as bad problems with the electronic diesel pump and emission systems. The autos used in them were adapted from the Sierra car and are really too lightweight for a heavy camper, if its not got a big cooler on it already you need to fit one, the auto repairer will no doubt insist on it.
