my son got his learners licence and first motor scooter this week. I did an online third party insurance quote online through state and they said they don't insure learner drivers as the main driver.

Yea sounds like a high risk to me. Is it worth insurance, If he hits something hard your gonna have more to worry about than insurance. How much is the scooter, $1500.

The problem with not being insured is that if he ploughs into the side of an expensive car, he's gonna be strung up by their insurance company.
Try phoning them rather than applying online. I use AMI and they have been good to me.

Try Honda Rider insurance or Protecta Insurance

Or kiwibiker insurance (you can guess the .co.nz part that goes right after kiwibiker). Dave (and his team) are Brokers who can find you a deal. In most cases, full cover is not a lot more than Third Party / Fire / Theft. Beware that Third Party does not automatically cover Fire or Theft. That has to be specified.

When I had a scooter AMI insured it for full insurance & can't remember the cost but it was very cheap. & AMI covered scooter & vehicle from learners licence onwards
