In 15 years hybrids will be dinosaurs. Their only purpose is to provide range that batteries currently lack and as battery tech improves there will be no need for your EV to haul around the extra weight and maintenance of an ICE.

framtech, Jun 14, 9:16am
three reasons straight up, 1/ most people don't give a shit about what govt says, 2/ modern cars have very good emissions with computer tuned engines and ad blue etc., 3/ EV can't haul heavy loads over any distance.
The good thing is my V8's just went up in price, as there are now becoming hot property, every time this idiot govt farts, I make more money and the sad fact is, they are making the poor even poorer.

tegretol, Jun 14, 9:33am
The answer is that such methods would not be politically acceptable and wuld cost them votes.

gblack, Jun 14, 5:45pm
Nearest charging station 25km away?

You don't have electricity at home. I see your problem with an EV then

gblack, Jun 14, 5:50pm
It is a plugin hybrid so eligible for a decent discount. or at least will be when the system kicks in

houseofdad, Jun 14, 6:39pm
Tesla New Zealand now taking orders for the cybertruck.

You will be able to get your rubbish to the dump quickly.

0 to 100km/hr 2.9 seconds.

tony9, Jun 14, 6:42pm
Are they not on back order at the moment? Thought I saw somewhere that decent Hiluxes are out to November for delivery.

tony9, Jun 14, 6:44pm
Of course they are, along with trips to Mars.

Of course they will need a regular operating schedule to Mars to get enough rare elements to build their batteries.

martin11, Jun 14, 7:04pm
Old figures now last 12 months it was only 10 %

bill-robinson, Jun 14, 7:11pm
I cannot understand why people are so keen to put all their eggs in one basket
only fuel electricity. are you really that dumb?

lakeview3, Jun 14, 7:16pm
This whole thing is a joke.

Fine if you live in a city, no good for heavy transportation or rural vehicles. Plus where are we getting all our electricity from? No new investment in that.

Why doesn’t the govt ask China and India to do their bit for climate change?

Yeah that’s right NOTHING New Zealand can do will fix the damage those 2 countries are doing to the earth.

Also why is the govt wasting so much time kowtowing to the greens? They will do it at their own expense in the end. Any more of these crazy policies and act will be the next govt. what next? Lightbulbs and shower heads? Oh wait 😂

kfahmed, Jun 14, 7:56pm
What about all those that can't afford an EV?
I drive and work n the Health care sector, drive about 150-200 a day of greater Wellington, no way can I stop to charge a car for 3hrs or 2 hrs.
todays EV's don't travel enough distance for my daily use.

tegretol, Jun 14, 7:58pm
Sure but that would create a reduction in network income (lines charges) so who would pay for the fixed (and rising) costs of maintaining the infrastructure?

harm_less, Jun 14, 8:12pm
Most new EVs have battery ranges of over 300km. Then you overnight charge, problem solved.

harm_less, Jun 14, 8:15pm
A lot of that infrastructure is surplus to requirements as domestic PV (AKA 'distributed generation') is typically consumed within the neighbourhood it is located. If transmission isn't required then maintenance becomes less of an issue.

lakeview3, Jun 14, 8:17pm
I can just see the electric double trailer stock trucks……what to do with all those cattle if they run out of juice?

Animal rights issue right there….

lakeview3, Jun 14, 8:18pm
Also what happens when the battery is kaput? Environmental hazard? Or do we just ship it back to where the lithium cam from and get the children who mined it to deal with it?

I'm sooo glad I'm nearer the end of my life than the beginning!

Happy to say that as a baby boomer, although we had very little money and nothing much in the way of labour saving devices (no fridge until I was 19, no family car - not even a telephone in the house until I'd left the family home), I couldn't have wished for a better time to grow up and see the massive advances in technology.

However, what I see now is a government so wrapped up in its own ideologies, that it really can't see the overall effect of decisions like this.

Just look at the older areas of Auckland with no off street parking, or the newer areas where they build a block with no parking at all. The house across the road from us with 11 vehicles and most others with 2, 3, 4 or 5 vehicles. Good luck with them wanting to charge up overnight.

Can the supply system really cope when at 6pm, everyone starts cooking dinner, TV on, lights on, heat pumps, on kids on the computers and everyone needing to plug in their EV(s)?

bitsy_boffin, Jun 14, 8:41pm
EV charge units can delay charge until off-peak, potentially smart charge units could communicate with the grid to schedule and adjust charge, or just be on ripple control like hot water cylinders.

poppy62, Jun 14, 9:32pm
Will be placing an order for a Mercedes EQA in the next few months. Will thank all of you for helping to subsidize it.

tony9, Jun 14, 9:37pm
Not normally. Most local supply companies use some form of load shedding at peak times, like 6pm. If you get a special rate to charge your EV likely it won't start charging until later in the evening.

In general the supply companies only provide distribution capability up to the planned load expected, with no provision for any more load. If you want more you pay, frequently a lot.

If I remember rightly a Daimler double six in the seventies was $12,000 new.

tegretol, Jun 14, 9:46pm
They are assuming that the technology will sort that by 2030. In the same way, they want short-haul domestic flights to be battery-powered. Would you get into an electric aeroplane?

tegretol, Jun 14, 9:48pm
Also, by 2030, they'll have perfected solar panels that work at night so no probs for the grid.

intrade, Jun 14, 9:58pm
OK lets think about this logical in the morning you will find the car has added 10km of range Due to the fact that ripple overload turned it off for most of the Night that's what would happen in the real non-fictional dream world as they live in.
