Put a few PV panels on your roof and run your car (and house) on sunshine. There's no charge on sunlight and as battery tech improves the economics of using saved generation to tide you overnight or a few overcast days are becoming equitable.

PV installation should be a mandatory condition of any building permit where orientation and physical constraints permit generation.

Dozens of countries and other authorities are moving towards phasing out ICEs in the coming decades: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase-out_of_fossil_fuel_vehicles

Its all good to say these things but does no one think about all the other stuff that will follow.

The government have a budget and need a set amount of money every year, they get X amount of dollars from petrol tax, if this disappears then they will need to get these dollars from somewhere else, this will be from either road user charges or tax on power.

Also we don't have enough power generation so we will have to go back to life like the 60's or triple power production.

Yes! Put the family on the bike and pick up the visitors at the airport on a bike and bring home the bags of cement and lengths of timber on the bike as well! Yes! Let's do it?

tony9, Nov 21, 6:12am
Not so, and depending on the clinical condition of the giver, it may be quite high.

Or so they say.

They WILL find a way to MAKE you pay! Naivety is dangerous and all too common!

It has not been forgotten.

You can see transpowers (our national grid operator's) projection for EV growth on page 26 here:

https://www.transpower.co.nz/sites/default/files/news-articles/attachments/TP%20Whakamana%20i%20Te%20Mauri%20Hiko.pdf

They are projecting 1.5m Light electric vehicles on the road in 2035, requiring around 4TWh / year more generation. We have easily enough consented new power schemes to cover this, but actually the shut down of Tiwai point will free up 5TWh / year.

Transmission upgrades will be required yes, but the cost of them is not problematic.

Moving Industrial process heat from coal / gas to Biofuel / Electricity is a much tougher challenge. The numbers are heaps bigger, and the industry is a lot more cost sensitive.

What a joke, the tesla model 3 is the most popular EV in the world. in the last 10 years tesla have made 640,000.
Toyota on the other hand have made more than 10,000,000 cars every year.
There are not enough EV's being made to meet demand.

s_nz, Nov 21, 10:21am
Yip, But countries like the UK are sending a message to automakers to ramp up EV production in a big way if they want to survive the next two decades.

Should note brands are steping production up. Tesla recently opened a china factory and are building another in Germany. VW now has an EV dedicated factory with a capacity of 330,000 vehicles a year, and pretty much every brand is pouring R&D spend into new electric models.

But yes, the auto industry is going to have to change massively in the next decade. Some brands won't survive.

Get with the programme, you have a car in the garage. Use the bike for general transport and use the car when transporting large heavy loads. Noone is picking up the visitors at the airport and bringing home the bags of cement and lengths of timber every day.

As for putting the family on a bike, why not? They have legs don't they?

If you have small children, which are too little to bike, as I do, there is something called a cargo bike which is ideal for taking a few small children on. I use a trailer for doing the supermarket shopping and picking up bags of cement etc.

Don't be so weak.

cattleshed, Nov 21, 7:02pm
It was you who said "just bike".

tygertung wrote:
"The most fuel efficient car is the one which sits in the garage (or driveway).
Just bike. Screw spending money on petrol, buy beer instead. Bike to the supermaket to pick it up. That's what legs are for."

Something for you to think about as it is my comment on what you have written.

cattleshed, Nov 21, 7:06pm
Here is someone who is thinking! Exactly. Now if that is true for central and regional councils and it is, then it is also true for the manufacturers who will NOT be settling on a lower return! Denial is dreamland!

bill-robinson, Nov 21, 7:42pm
along with those who think getting rid of real cars will reduce so-called global warming and air pollution,

amasser, Nov 21, 8:05pm
It has (a) b.

tygertung, Nov 21, 8:19pm
Like I said, use the bike for general transport, and use the car for heavy loads. Heavy loads for most people are not a daily occurrence, so can bike most days. Easy.

bitsnpieces2020, Nov 21, 8:46pm
you know they mined less lithium in 2019, than in 2018 ?

kazbanz, Nov 21, 9:27pm
I honestly do not see specifically battery only vehicles taking over the world. My main objection to them is just how "dirty" they are by the time you as the first owner have them. BUT I'm very keen to see alternative fuel sources being explored. What for example is happening with hydrogen powered cars?

cattleshed, Nov 21, 10:03pm
Ah no. Your general transport comment came later. My comment, as you know, related to what you initially said ie "just use your bike".

cattleshed, Nov 21, 10:05pm
Yes, so called global warming. Another scam!

bill-robinson, Nov 22, 6:22pm
why do people want an ev? i think it is the novelty feature, look at me,look at me i am different

tygertung, Nov 22, 6:25pm
Save money on petrol and ruin the environment slightly more slowly.

alowishes, Nov 22, 6:51pm
Sure it will happen - once the ten thousand new houses have been built, all the extra cops are on the beat, child ‘povidy’ has been eliminated and those millions of trees have been planted etc etc as promised by our current government.
