An apprentice would be expected to buy a Dropsaw in his third year. Foreman will usually own a line or dot laser so a chippy wouldnt be expected to own that for a few years. The company will provide big stuff not commonly used like a Concrete Breaker, Rotary Laser or Dumpy level.
Remember that "most" tools are owned by the individual tradie, not the company so borrowing by another is a favour, not a prerequisite. An apprentice that is not making progress towards buying his own gear will not have a job for too long. Once qualified you are expected to have a comprehensive kit.
My current site, there are myself (foreman) a chippie and a first year apprentice. We have 2 dropsaws, one PLS5 dot laser, one concrete drill and 2 of us have all our other gear like skilsaws, planers, drills, nail guns etc. The apprentice has just bought a 5 piece battery kit and has quite a few hand tools. He's working towards a nailgun next.
The company provides Large breaker, plate compactor, specialised tools like coil nailers etc.

Self insure the only cheap option, insurance cost are high due to high number of claims.

I didn't say to put it into the bank, I said to put it into an investment fund.

Investment funds are getting good returns.

I have portable plant and equipment covered under FMG for all my gear, I pay $300 a year for 10K cover, its one of those must haves until you have enough cash behind you that you could look at self insurance

Vero business does contents insurance which has cover anywhere in the country, this can be specified for a trade vehicle

Some insurance companys decide on common km's per year & total value of the gear normally carried in that vehicle plus normal parking, as to if they will allow domestic insurance to cover the contents for theft etc.

Eg: $10k vehicle with $5K contents normally parked behind a driveway gate & only used 3 or 4 days a week specifically for work, would probably be covered

i recently had all mine stolen, i dont have a lot, all my power tools were not in there thankfully, but still lost 2000 worth.
My household contents covered me up to 1500 which was enough to replace most things , but finding a receipt for everything was hard.

If i could give any advice, keep receipts, it might only be $30 screw driver, but suddenly you have 10x screw drivers its $300

who were you with? I might ring FMG and find if its a requirement for them as well. surly photos would be enough
