Who cleans up after a car crash?

Because my neighbours are deaf or can't be bothered helping people, I am usually the first person to help when there is a car crash in my street.
I sweep up the glass and sometimes put cones out to avoid further accidents.

Recently there was a major crash. Probably both cars will be written off.
Bits of wreckage were put on a neighbour's driveway.
I assumed that the tow truck driver would at least put useful bits of wreckage with the car when it was towed (e.g. the number plate) and that the policeman attending would ask for that to happen. But that did not happen.
The blameless driver was not in a good state to do anything.
The neighbour, instead of putting the wreckage in his rubbish like I usually do, called the Council who sent two vehicles to pick up the rubbish.

At least I got to talk to the Council people who were unaware that there have been over 40 accidents in my street. Maybe they will do something to minimise the accidents. I have suggestions to reduce them by 90%. In the past they have ignored my suggestions.

Recently a police car crashed for the same reasons. Maybe they will believe me now.

As an ex towie Id pick up the big bits and sweep the rest into the gutter and call the local roading contractor and they would come along and clean up the rest. Usually the fire service would contain and fluid spills

To which Council people did you speak?

In Wellington years ago I found that the Council knew where injury accidents occurred but didn't get any feedback from insurance companies etc on just vehicle damage accidents.

the towie is responsible for basic clean ups and after that the council. Police have nothing to do with it.

True the Police are not responsible for the actual clean up, BUT they are in charge of when it should happen. An accident scene can also be a crime scene, so the police do not would someone, being all community spirited, and doing a quick clean up !

There was a lot of rain. I swept all of the road except under the crashed car. The policeman disappeared. I waited until the car was towed and was going to sweep under the car, but the towie just drove over the remaining glass and bits of plastic, and disappeared.
There were useful bits amongst the remaining rubbish (e.g. a rego plate and mirrors with motors in them), so I thought I would leave them in case the owner wanted them. I usually put them in the crashed cars.
I like to clean up the road after an accident, as I will be driving along it myself and I don't like bits of glass in my tyres.

Isn't there a Levy included in vehicle insurance that pays for the cleaning up .

I'll do what NO ONE here is doing for you (and the good towies who do it) - THANK YOU for cleaning up after crashes. As a cyclist who hates getting punctures from glass on the roads I really appreciate it. I often phone the council to sweep up broken glass.
