Ok so I need a new car. I can't afford too much but will get finance at car sales yard. I need advice on what cars are good on gas and not cost the earth to fix. I currently have a Honda Accord US wagon 1996 and its costly on gas and very high on kms and now things need fixing. So think it's time to get something else. advice would be appreciated.

you want a 2000 toyota with old engine not vvti junk if you want a reliable car. alternatively a older one but the older they are the more rust has formed on them usually.
Also its best to buy cars without finace .

If you want serious responses, you need to supply more information.

What is your budget?
Rural or urban driving?
How many people do you need to transport?
Do you need a wagon again?

pandai, Oct 3, 2:09am
What needs fixing on your current car? Even if you think it uses too much petrol the changover costs are never as economic as you think

Ok so the abs light has come on in my car. I got it scanned today and they aren't sure what's wrong with it. he said get some canister fixed at a cost of $600 no guareentee and if that doesn't work replace the whole unit at a cost of over $1000. The car has had heaps spent on it trans, starter motor etc. it's done about 270000km. oh now the fan belt is squealing. It's only used in town but driving to and from work is about 40km a day costing around $350 a month gas.
I'm service the car regularly but find it hard to come up with repair money.
If I was to buy a car I could get finance and use the old car for a deposit. I would need a car for 3 people in the price range of $2500 to $7500 either a station wagon or a car with tow bar would be great but the cheapest option is better. Hope this helps

abs light on just means the brake will work as they do on a older car with no abs . A dealer will give you as good as nothing for your car as they cant onsell it or they have to give 100 years consumer guarantees act waranty , that is the reason why they cant give you anything as they have to scrap it as end of live car or they are screwed as consumer guarantees act would drive a dealer to ruin if he was to onsell it.
even you have to contract out of consumer guarantee act if you sell it with the wording as is where is , or you be sued for future repairs under consumers guarantee act.
The car i posted is covered under cga new 30 day wof and little can go wrong plus its got a towbar.
they use about 7 to 8 liter fuel per 100km so that be 40km times 5 days 200km a week times 4 =800km per month :7 liter lets say 8 to make it easy 64 liter fuel times 2.10= 134$ a month in fuel
so i dont know if your trip is 40km one way that be times 2 then 270$ in fuel.

Is it worth replacing the whole abs unit at $1000?

msigg, Oct 3, 4:15am
Yes Intrade has a good point, as above his figures you will save approx $80 max a month( probably only $50/month) but you will have a loan to pay back of maybe $50 a week for three years or more, you will also need to insure the car for full cover, your old car could be 3rd party, savings there. just some food for though,

First thing to do with the abs light is reset it and see if it goes away. If it does then all good. If it comes back then take it to someone else who knows the car inside out such as an independent Honda specialist. They should be able to give a much better answer using fault codes and diagnostic skills than you have so far.

A squealing fan belt is usually nothing to fear. Easy fixed and cheap 98% of the time.

NO
and its probably not even faulty usually its a wire or corrosion problem. of course it could be internal corrosion of the abs unit if your brake fluid was never changed.

gypsy271, Oct 3, 4:31am
How do you reset it? No one has offered this as an option.

intrade, Oct 3, 4:33am
some tip with no abs working like on older cars
You can not steer the car in any direction if the brakes are locked up, so should you brake in a corner , and you should not do that anyhow you should brake before the corner and accelerate out of the corner.
but should your brakes lock in a corner let the brake go instantly so you can steer the car again and reaplly the brake again but with half the force only.
thats about all to know and learn if you have no abs
anti- blocking-system its anti lock brakes but abs is german
anti- blockier-system

with a honda capable scantool you can reset the codes. i dont know if disconecting the battery will clear codes on a honda it would on my 95 corolla toyota

a us honda from 96 could be obd2 plug try find for the data link conector
pull the ashtray out and look if you have a obd2 plug there

With auctions, people are entering into a contract online, so by law, dealers need to put up a Consumer Information Notice on the ad.
I'm not seeing it.

The ABS pumps fail a lot on those wagons and is usually the pressure canister on the front of the pump. There are 2 blue plugs behind the glovebox (towards the bottom inside corner) a 3 wire one & a 2 wire one. The 2 wire one is for the ABS, when you bridge the two terminals the ABS light will flash on the dash, each long flash equals 10 & each short flash equals 1, ie 1 long flash & 2 short = 12, 2 long & 3 short = 23. From memory 12 is low pressure (usually the canister). And a trick on these Accords fault 21 is just a brake light bulb (I think just the RH one), had 2 in recently with this fault.
The canister is about $450-$500 retail last time I priced one, only held on to the pump by two bolts but they come up from underneath so the whole pump usually has to be lifted/removed to fit it, then re-bleed the system.
Once that has been replaced new on these ABS systems they usually will outlast the rest of the vehicle.

In behind the ashtray is a plug with a red and black wire attached to it

gypsy271, Oct 3, 5:43am
Thanks for info. should I get it fixed at cost of $600 or replace unit in your opinion or get new car?

gypsy271, Oct 3, 5:58am
I can't see anything like that

intrade, Oct 3, 6:19am
keep looking and look for the plugs hamhonda mentioned . maybe he can post immages what they look like

fordcrzy, Oct 3, 6:39am
it wont get a wof with the abs light on and people wont want to buy it faulty so maybe just get it fixed and start doing research on the next car, that way you can buy the next one and sell yours without too much pressure

brapbrap8, Oct 3, 8:57am
Your car is worth $500, I wouldn't be spending anything on it, just try update to something a bit newer and better condition.

carclan, Oct 3, 9:11pm
I had one of these Toyota's and it did 480,000 km before the automatic transmission gave up the ghost.
