what are these cars like on petrol.I am looking at getting one as a round town/work runner.

about average for that sort of vehicle, probably 10-12L/100km if used purely for urban running. There are better choices if you just want to do that though, a (I'm assuming) 2L engine isn't needed, look at smaller vehicles.

Pretty reliable in manual and parts are easy to get.
Agree with franc though, much more economical options available.

I had a '95 2.5L Telstar. It was thirstier than a V8.
I also had a '95 TX5 (2L) that wasn't much better.

They're getting a bit long in the tooth nowadays, don't see too many around.

they were bloody reliable wheels though, apart from the odd distributor crapping out virtually nothing went wrong with them until that fateful day when years of cooling system negligence finally took its toll on the head and head gasket, or in the case of autos the trans went belly up.Most of those wagons and Orions did squillions of k's with bugger all done to them.

2.5L V6, I had the usual cooling hose connections go and head gasket, all around that 100 - 120 km mark. They were really thirsty with it too. But it went like stink, 121kw and a under 1300kg, made for a quick car.

I had a 94 wagon that I abused for 3yrs and 40,000ks, had two oil changes and at 307ks was running great, had a bit of a tappit tick for a couple of mins on start up.

Got one here. Paid 2000 for it about 18mths ago. Only probs so far starter motor brushes (Couldn't get them from a dealer, but auto electricians seem to have them). Coil to dist HT lead. Never measured economy but doesn't seem too bad. Could probably buy a lot of petrol with the difference in price to whatever comes next. Acid test. No, I don't want to sell it.

Had a 1993 2.0L 4cyl manual, consistently used 8.4L/100kms city driving. Nothing ever went wrong with it, just wished for something a bit newer and more comfortable.

Manual or auto! Petrol or diesel! If petrol, 2.0 litre carb, 2.0 litre EFi or 2.5 litre V6 motor!

Manual 2.0 petrol 239000ks very very tidy.

I had a Mazda 626 (same car as Telstar), and it used 10L / 100km overall. 8.5 to 9L / 100km on the open road.

That stuff out of Mazda in the early to mid nineties was gold, so simple and reliable.
