Wheel bearing play

jummybuffett, Oct 7, 12:06am
ive just failed a wof for excessive play in the right rear, and have pressed the new bearing on the axle, but there is still play, could this be due to the diff being a bit sloppy and not supporting the axle!

wow congatulations on your rear wheel drive 1989 diahatsu charade.
[Perhaps make year and model might assist here!]

Blimin heck, do you want the good new or the bad news

AArrhhh burger it, here goes.>>>>>
MOST front wheel drive cars that fail a wof for "excessive play" in a back wheel bearing, CAN be tightened up with no problems, as long as theres no noises from the original bearing.
it's normally only a SLIGHT amount of play that fails a wof with no bearing noise.

THATS what you are needing to do with the new bearing as well, UNLESS theres a lot of play which in that case the bearing seats may not be "seated" correctly

its a rear wheel drivewith a solid rearnot irs .
new bearing is seated correctly,
is it possible that if the diff has excessive wear that it may not support the axle causeing play!

unbeatabull, Oct 7, 1:40am
Solid rear would say its in the diff.

Kenworth aye!

Okay so ya profile kinda SUGGESTS it might be anything from an RX2 to an RX7

End of the day older rear wheel bearing systems SOMETIMES actually had a manufacturers TOLERANCE for play.
Also sometimes someone has gas axed off a bearing and the new bearing can't seat properly.
Or the steel bearing retainer [goes on axle first and 4 nuts hold it] may need replacing.
taper roller!
sealed bearing!
ball race bearing with oil seal seperate!
[neva done a tang b4.]

jummybuffett, Oct 7, 2:02am
it is a sealed bearing, but am thinking the diff is worn as i have never encountered this problem before,
only one way to find out,
cheers for the input

Some earlier IMPERIAL bearings in SOME vehicles had an *O* ring built in to the bearing outer race outside.
Replacement bearing may have a diferrent outside diameter. due to being actually a metric size.
But again make, year and model unspecified.-
