the rav is better suited in town to actual off road, but if its metal roads only itll be fine.

the zuki's are actually a capable offroader

The simple answer to this one is, is the vehicle going to be put in sticky enough situations that will need low ratio!
Yes=Vitara/Escudo
No=RAV4

In terms of overall driving the Suzuki tends to be the better weekend toy and bush basher, the RAV is a bit more civilised on the road and is preferable if a lot of open road driving is involved, if only from a comfort point of view, as time went by the Suzukis did improve in this area, I refer to mid/late '90's versions here.

Thanks franc123 @ r15.you have answered the problems we were concerned about, especially needing low ratio on our rugged terrain.Cheers.-

Don't forget the tyres. There are a lot of tyres around these days which are only designed for minimal off-road use. If the vehicle is going to spend most of it's time off road or if the terrain is especially rough then consider some serious off-road tyres. The compromise will be that annoying hum on tar seal at higher speeds but that's a small price to pay when your mate gets stuck and you don't.

Thankys carkitter,. there's a 1990 Suzuki Escudo (Vitara) that has taken our eye on here with lots of spare bits done to it,but might play it safeand stick to a stock standard and definately have the best tyres for the terrain

They can barely do on-road use, who would even dream of taking it off-road! My mum has a 2003 model and the thing is god damn awful, even she says its the worst car she has ever bought.
