Converting auto to manual transmission

neuroticpsychot, Feb 7, 11:08pm
Does anyone know where we might be able to get our auto transmission converted to a manual in Auckland! Since we apparently need to replace our while transmission we are thinking of replacing it with a manual gearbox.

Yeah try ringing any mechanics workshop. they should be able to do it. however i doubt a workshop would be very cheap

Dont waste your time and money, it is not worth the effort, this question has been aired here many times, it is a silly idea

These sorts of jobs are only economic if you can DIY by getting another whole car with a good gearbox in it, very cheap of an identical model thats been crashed or got a blown motor etc, park em up side by side and transfer everything you need from the manual donor car to the auto one, once you start pulling things apart you find loads of little bits you need to do a neat job of it, even then it might not be totally straightforward.Manufacturers can make lots of nasty little differences between manual an auto versions of the same car that make conversions VERY time consuming.Once its all done whatever good bits that are on the donor car you can sell off to offset the cost of the conversion.Its simply not worth doing otherwise, if you had to pay full workshop rates for labour and pay for all the parts from wreckers it wouldn't take long for the costs to go past what replacing or even reconing your auto would be.

Garage gearbox conversion on a std "joe bloggs" car . mmmmmm
Between $500 for a super simple swap with a super cheap (or free) gearbox & assorted parts .

Up to $2500 minimum +++++ > $ > $ > $ >

Exactly especially if you'd perfer a manual. Nice cars by the way.

My advice, dont do it, replace or repair the origonal transmission, your car is only worth $5000 when it was going dont spend another $5000 on it,,,, in fact tell us more about what your transmission is doing, we might be able to help.

It's something that normally only the very keen car fanboys attempt. Young guys with VTEC Hondas, hoons with Nissan skidlines, old boys like my Dad with his Triumph.

Always DIY, as others have said getting it done professionally would be in that realm where if you have to ask about cost, you can't afford it.

There are a lot of bits to buy, you'll need a manual car's pedal box and pedals, the whole gear shifter linkage, miscellaneous bits of the fascia that will be different. Sometimes Auto and Manual cars may have different pick-up points on the chassis for the engine mounts. Often the Manuals and Autos will have different engine control computers.

If you go to www.nzhondas.com, amongst all the ephemera there are some very good write-ups of projects that will give you and idea of what you are up against.

Basically if your car is already the love of your life, and putting a manual box in it would complete you, then go for it, but there's no quick easy cheap way!

Definantly the easyest way is an identical doner car thats been bashed up the %$#@
