Particularly noticeable with turbo diesels. The colder the air the more expansion you get in combustion, hot air is already to a fair degree expanded before it reaches the combustion chambers. Winter driving =more power in some engines.

The cooler the fuel the more dense, as any race team has long known. The warmer it is the more it expands.
