Honda Integra with B18c VTEC

buchananz, Feb 19, 8:25am
Just got a DC2 integra with the B18c engine.
I have not driven one before and I am wondering if the VTEC is working!
When should it come on and how do I know if it is working!

Does it have DOHC VTEC on the rocker cover! There were plenty of NZ-new 1800cc GSi's sold in NZ and they are not VTEC powered.
At 5000rpm the secondary intake manifold ports open and the engine note hardens. At 6000rpm all hell breaks loose and you'd better start looking for another gear. Redline is at 8000rpm. On a Type-R its 8500rpm.
If someone's been poking around the distributor it is possible to blow the circuit in the ECU that switches on the VTEC function.

I was unaware they have secondary manifold intake ports. I find it very hard to believe that fidling with the distributor would damage the computer.

The vtec x-over on a B18c is pretty subtle and happend ~4500rpm.The secondary runners are higher up in the rev range and the sound is much more noticeable.

op if ya have a oil gauge it will drop as vtec 'kicks in'. thats if ya cant feel it and ya need to be going 5km or faster

Wrong on both counts. I have training manuals from Honda NZ which prove it.

carkitter, Feb 20, 2:00am
That's why VTEC controllers aren't a good idea.

vtecintegra, Feb 20, 2:05am
Actually I'm pretty sure that is exactly how it works (on the regular B18c, not the Type R)

carkitter, Feb 20, 2:08am
Maybe you should do the Honda training then.

vtecintegra, Feb 20, 2:10am
So when are you saying the x-over is on a standard (non Type R) B18c!

carkitter, Feb 20, 2:18am
My understanding is 6000rpm. I'll have a look at the manuals I've got, there won't be much on the Integra specifically as the Training regime started around '96 and the DC2 was released in '93 but from memory there is a book on VTEC with a chart showing various models and the VTEC rev range. I have books on the 96YM Civic, 97YM Prelude, 97YM Legend and 98YM Accord plus various books on other Honda systems. I'll have a look later today.
