Tyres. Do they still plug tyres when you have had a nail in it or do you need a new one

Depends on where it is, size of nail etc. Most punctures are still repairable, and most tyre shops offer free puncture repairs

So-called "plugs" ie, string repairs, have been illegal for well over a decade now.
Cold repairs (what most all tyre shops do using mushroom patches or bead-to bead patches), can only be used within the tread-width area of the tyre. No cold repairs can be used either in the shoulder or sidewall area.

They are still used on quad bike tyres I believe.

Supercheap still sell the plug kits.
Oddly I have more faith in a raw rubber plug than I do in a cold patch.
