Yes there is lots of names, but visa debit cards etc are certainly a eftpos credit cards with the function to allow you use it like a credit card. So handy any of the likes of card over to a person is very much a risk just like a credit card.

LOL John . VISA is a CREDIT card company = Visa debit card = PREPAID credit card.
I here by challenge you to try & use a std debit bank card (any BNZ/ ANZ/ Wespack / ASB /NB bank card) ONLINE or for ANY Credit card type charge.
mrfxit,
Jun 5, 7:44pm
Thats why I use a std debit bank card, can't be used for a credit charge or online. HAS to have a personal pin entered AT the time of the transaction AT the shop
johnf_456,
Jun 5, 7:44pm
Well I am not going to try because a standard card will not work online. It has to be a debit card or whatever your bank calls it and once again its johnf_456 not john because you feel like calling me that.
johnf_456,
Jun 5, 7:46pm
Correct, debit cards were created for people that can't control spending so therefore a visa debit card limits the credit card to the amount in their bank account.
mrfxit,
Jun 5, 7:53pm
LOL bollocks .
Std debit cards were around LONG ago, mostly created for ordinary 'non business' type ppl. Credit cards WERE mostly the domain of company's/ business ppl (mostly directors etc at 1st) , then traveling salesmen/business ppl in general (office boss's etc) & the very wealthy.

No, because some people do not want a credit card has it gets them into a debit but on the other hand they need a credit card for like purchasing items online paying pills etc. So a visa debit card is in the middle, giving credit card abilitys but on the other hand not getting you into debt has it links to your bank account. Which is the scenario behind debit like credit cards linked to your bank account, has some can't control their money and get into debt with a real credit card. So in reality they can use their visa debit card to top up their phone or pay bills etc with out the fear of debt has its linked to your bank account. Times have changed, yes these cards are very new.
I know what a credit card is, but you cannot understand the concept that if someone hands you a visa debit card, you can write the numbers off the card and use it to make a purchase online (fraudulently) .
Visa debit card is a credit card that sources funds from your account direct rather than credit like a credit card. Heck!

LOL . well at least I wouldn't have to worry about serving ppl with yours or crzyhrse's attitude or worry about the other thief's pinching my petrol. Lifes stressful enough on a forecourt without having to put up with that crud attitude.
johnf_456,

I can assure you its not just me and crzyhrse everyone who posted in this thread pretty much agrees, you are clearly out numbered and most people hate prepay gas end of story. When you are considered a thief before you step foot on the gas station, all because its considered fair to punish everyone for a small group. Pumping gas is not stressful I did it for a while as a young lad.
mrfxit,
Jun 5, 8:12pm
OFFS yes I KNOW that. Never said I didn't Heres an idea you may not understand, you stick to your credit type cards (prepaid & std) & I will stick to my std bank debit card (pin only onsite eftpos)
Not hard to see which is safer.

I have a standard bank card and a credit card has I much prefer the proper thing. Security is never an issue as I will not give my card to anyone ever like in exchange to activate prepay. Security goes down to the end user just like if you told someone your pin you can't blame the bank.

Sounds like MANY MANY years ago . things sure have changed since then . Oh & as I mentioned before, I was far more then just a pump jockey.
mrfxit,

THAT small group of ppl cost the oil companys hundreds of thousands of $$ every year in drive off's, add to that police/court time, staff attendance time dealing with it, often after their shifts, busted pumps from the runners/ downtime on those busted pumps & on it goes .>>> That same group will also be responsible for other trouble around the country
richms,

Then its not a debit card, its just a normal ATM card. Geez, get your terms right.

IMO the servos should put a site up with a bounty on identifying the people from CCTV footage. Would quickly get their "friends" dobbing them in.
If its their own car then a law change should allow them to take it from them, proceeds of crime and all that. Doesnt help the stolen ones that do a fill and run tho.

Pre pay is a bit inconvenient, but I am happy to go along with it as I know the gas stations lose out heaps to thieves, who appear to be almost socially acceptable these days.

Skimming and duplicating a standard magstripe card is trivial, if the crim or their accomplice or their cameras also happens to see your PIN when you enter it then they have everything they need.
Leaving your card with somebody untrusted is not a good idea, especially a simple magstripe EFTPOS card.

just wondering, why do so many people insists on filling their tank right up! carrying a full tank of gas around is virtually like carrying an extra person in your car. you waste gas carrying that extra unnecessary weight of the gas. why not just chuck in 30 bucks or something then put some more in as you need it. as for fill up i'd assume that most of yous would have filled up the car enough times to know how many litres your tank hold. and as for prepaid, if a petrol station gunna do 24hr prepay, ya might as well not bother hiring staff and just run the site like pakn save, swipe card, enter pin, hit fill, fill car up and charge once pump put back to it's resting place. i know with pak n saves self serve if u use eftpos and ur balance low, it knows how much gas to give you.

Not all pay at the pump stations allow you do buy what you want. I go to Gull sometimes but you MUST have $150 on your card. Any dollar less and it will decline. I had $100 and got declined. Only time it is good is if you CHOSE how much you want, then get charged, THEN pump it. Not everyone has hundreds of dollars on their cards at the end of each week (after pay day).

But I also get my gas from Mobl Avalon who is prepay 24/7 (they used to be a major target for theifs even robberies - I worked at Caltex down the road and never got robbed). Anyways, I buy from them cos they are usually 90% of the time same price as Gull. I laugh at the fools who pay 5c more just to get Shell or BPs gas. Its all the same and Mobil is only 5mins further drive for a good discount.
