after 10years of ownership absolutly no breakdowns even after turbo'ng it to double its original horsepower.

oh and i had a toyota SR coupe that i bought after it had been stolen and taken for an extended joy ride. the owner thought it would die any moment.thousands of boy racer valve bounce Kays later and it was still going strong with only a few oil changes.

1981 Toyota XT Liftback Auto, 24 years never a problem, course the usual ~ 4 batteries, 2 waterpumps, 1 starter, 2 sets alternator brushes, 2 radiator re-cores, 4 rear exhausts complete, couple of frnt.brake & radiator hoses and number of disc pads. That probably added up to $1100 for 24 years. Terrific car and was still running well at 270,000km . Tidy body - did 2 full repaints (+- $650) but was near shagged with rust.

A $300 1984 mr2 I found in south auckland, anyone that knows 238 will know it's a tribute to how much abuse cars can take. I've rolled it, hit a tree, crashed up a bank on lend, dropped off a huge jump that tore out a couple engine mounts, mis shifts taking it to 11,000rpm+ on lend, often took it to 9k on downshifts rallying, T-boned an old rwd corolla hard, was T boned so hard the door was torn open and wrapped round the rollcage. Beat on for about 2 seasons with a broken chassis bad enough you could move the suspension tower by hand, been sandwhiched between a couple fords and landed up taking out a sierra, took on a 4L EB falcon in a shoving match and won, hit the wall at waikaraka and kept going, blew a chunk out of the gearbox casing the size of a big hand and completed the race with no oil in the box absolutely giving it balls with me wondering who the dick that left the huge oil slick on the track was and that isn't even half the things it's been through. If chuck norris was a car this is it.

Best first car EVER, been so much fun.

My VW Beetle. Dad owned for 37 (thirty seven) years and the only time it stopped was a broken conrod.

I hate to say it but the most reliable car i have ever had would be a jappa. 98 wingroad, just cant kill it and i have been trying for 10 years! tho when you get it airborn it tends to bend bits that need replacing but that motor is like a $2 hooker that just keeps going no matter whos useing it

bmwnz, Jun 6, 3:17pm
All of them. I don't have cars that breakdown.

michael.benn, Jun 6, 6:24pm

1992 NZ new ST190 Toyota Corona GL. Never missed a beat over 2 years of fairly hard use. Always serviced and kept in good condition, this car, while basic has still been the most reliable I've had, even 14 years later. Maybe that was part of the reason, wasn't loaded to the hilt with features. Mine was the poverty pack model of the NZ new range. Didn't even have air con as standard (was a factory option only). Anyway, a great car - people keep a hold of them these days, and good second hand ones don't last long on the market.

'89 Mazda Familia sedan, 1.3 4 speed beast.
Family owned from 95-07, purchased with 60k on the clock, I parked it into a solid object with 377,000km on the clock.
In those years/km it had, one split radiator top tank, LHS CV exploded and the clutch went just before 300k.
Was thrashed endlessly, poor car.
It's about to overtaken by the '96 Corolla, that's at 360k, it started showing signs of a crack in the rad top tank. Not bad after 200,000km of no other problems.

Fiat Pandas. many of them (used them for work cars for the boys, helped out someone who was down on their luck with one etc)
They were specifically designed to be reliable and cheap to fix. There are no unnecessary items i.e no door handles, no second windscreen wiper on the front. All glass is flat including windscreen for cheap replacements. you get the idea.

They average about 50 MPG and do 150KM/h flat out but get to 100km/h surprisingly quickly.

The only thing they break is clutch cables which happens about every 70'000km. $30 for a new one and 3 minutes to change with a crescent so you just keep one in the boot. (this is not a fault of the original design but a fault of the RHD conversion.

I once bought one several hundred km's away that had not run in years.
I arrived off the bus with a small can of petrol and a toolbox. Threw the gas in and push started her and we were off. Stopped for more gas and air at a station where I could push start again on my own and drove home without a problem.

auII falcon i thrashed it did burnouts and time trials around the tanker track untill the rear tyres were shreaded but that car never broke anything even after 3 years of abuse

A couple of Corolla's would be my most reliable cars, but for two different set of criteria!92 Corolla wagon 4AFE just for easy commuting, and being ignored other than petrol and tyres.87 Corolla GT (AE92) for being just tough as old boots. It has been a club car for around 8 years so far, and the one big issue was big ends crying enough at Manfeild.Replaced the engine five years ago with another used uknown condition one, and she is still going strong :-)Basically every issue with the competition car has been user error, rather than any fault of the car.
