Do you have a car with black and silver reg plates

Whats worse is how little most of these plates are worth should you decide to sell them again!I wouldn't call them investments of any sort, except perhaps for a select few.Have a browse through the plates section on here and see how many hardly attract any views, let alone bids!

zephyrheaven, May 7, 1:40am
Ive tried this before & got a flat 'no' - my zephyr had Dsomething (Dunedin car) - still has one of them behind the PP now - someone in the 90's thought it would be cute to get NE1965 (year of the car) which always looked like a scar on it in white plates
So I tried PP & LTNZ etc but it was a flat no at each avenue for a reprint of the original - I wouldnt have minded white ones as there is a very clever guy in Chch that makes them look like the old black & silvers over a weekend

why do people care about the old plates, they arent part of the car ,they are different in every country (or state) and in N.Z. they used to get changed every couple of years, so if your car is old enough even the black plate won't be original.

Okay first I knew about, last news article I read mentioned it was only an idea. I'll have to do some reading before commenting more. Thanks.

johnf_456, May 8, 7:37pm
why does this matter!

franc123, May 8, 7:44pm
All that says is that they have the power to take the plates off you before they grant an exemption, its not something that they would do for no reason.I guess it might come down to how many times you have been busted for driving an exempted vehicle.

crzyhrse, May 9, 1:44am
You're happy with the option being left entirely over to bureaucrats!

Count me out.

franc123, May 9, 1:59am
Never said I was happy about it, merely pointing out the fact that its a discretionary power that whoever this Registrar at NZTA has.

crzyhrse, May 9, 2:12am
I figured you were happy with it since you believe "it's not something that they would do for no reason."

franc123, May 9, 2:26am
Well they wouldn't!There would have to be justification for doing so.Its not an aspect of the licencing exemption law that is in widespread use is it!I would doubt that the agencies that handle licencing and registration transactions/plates would really welcome having to store large quantities of dirty used number plates to be returned to owners at a later date, which it states in that passage of legislation they would endeavour to do.NZ Post for example certainly wouldn't, they haven't handled the issuing and disposal of plates for many years now, and not everybody in NZ is within a close distance of either VTNZ, VINZ or AA outlets. It'd be more hassle than its worth.

smac, May 9, 2:31am
Ya this has been thrashed out before - anyone who thinks NZTA is prepared to handle thousands off plates unnecessarily is some kinda conspiracy nut. It also says they have to return the plates to you. The intention here is so that if you are caught driving without cause while on an exemption, they have a stick to use on you next time.

franc123, May 9, 2:35am
Yep, in a nutshell. It's just stick waving really, "because they can"!

hutchk, May 9, 2:54am
Call me a hopeless romantic, but I like the idea of some dude at Archibald and Shorter in Auckland screwing a set of plates to my car back in '68, where they've remained ever since.

crzyhrse, May 9, 4:51am
You reckon that might be only because it's only been 7 days since the law was passed allowing them to!

What they dont want you to know: New supertech Cameras cannot read the old black plates. New Cameras will be permanently mounted reading plates matching up data to see if its warranted and rego'd then automatic billing the registered owner. They just cant get around the old black plates with all that super high technology. Sooner or later you'll lose them.
I have the inside knowledge, call me a dummy whatever.

sfw4, May 9, 5:49am
Ive been here a long time reading typical old fart comments like "ugh old wrecks should be off the road and WOF's made super harder etc" well i hope you old farts are gonna be displeased to know that the Nanny State crap will be soon biting your azz one way or another. Kiss goodbye to your black plates. Watch the Media around Jan 2012 when it will roll out. The boyracers will be used and blamed to usher this in all for safety reasons. More like Nanny State revenue collecting :p

franc123, May 9, 7:22am
You might want to read the brand new legislation linked to above re number plates.

franc123, May 9, 7:24am
I've read it, thanks.Perhaps we should open this one up to those registered vehicle owners who have attempted to exempt their vehicles in the last seven days then and see if they have been asked to hand their plates in!

smac, May 9, 3:38pm
Unless it's recently changed a light domestic trailer is not subject to continuous licensing, and therefore you do not have to backpay. Registered as a rental or anything else screwy!

freeman42, May 25, 9:21pm
at this stage your black and white plates are safe but to know more give the ministry of transport a call for more information.

crzyhrse, Apr 13, 12:50pm
Yeah, right. Like you're going to get the right answer on anything by ringing them.
