Yea Timaru Herald used to use them too. Man the interior and exterior was in a bad way when they sold it. Done 300k but the engine was ok (tappet cover leaking and tube seals. but there usually bad for that anyway)

I have never seen a primera or bluebird as a taxi. Heaps of maximas and those newer skyline sedans, but bluebirds and primers all seem a bit small to be taxis.

I agree with you that camrys and corollas are super-reliable.

BUT "reliable = boring".Really!

So does that mean you think it's exciting to break down by the roadside in the middle of nowhere! Or have to call your work saying your car won't start! Is it exciting to have to spend one weekend after another trying to figure out what's wrong with the damn thing! Is it exciting to pay some mechanic mega - bucks to fix some godawful problem, only to have to spend more mega-bucks 6 months down the track because something else has crapped out!

lets not confuse reliability with performance.

yes, camrys and corollas are not exciting cars to look at or drive.

but for those who like to get from a to b, always, every time, without mishap,
the reliability of these cars is .perhaps not exciting, but very very rewarding.

can we then imagine a car that is very reliable, exciting to look at and exciting to drive - I can't argue with that, but what car in your opinion fits all 3 criteria!

how about a Toyota Celica/Supra!
Mitsubushi GTO!
Nissan 300ZX!
Mazda RX!

I serviced a RWD corolla with 1,176,000 kms. It was used by an old guy for rural mail. He had it serviced weekly. Had 10 years of warrent sheets/service records in a folder.

Am doing a cambelt on a 3L Toyota in the next few days, 1,003,000km. Have known this vehicle since it was 13,000km old and it has never been apart, only serviced and maintained.

Some American company is trying to design and build a super reliable internal combustion engine for the US Army. Using the same principles of rapid prototyping, they're trying to build a 'one-piece engine': no separable head, block, covers, screws, bolts, etc. pretty much just one completely sealed block of metal. It's also lubricated with a toxic lubricant with a very high thermal tolerance so it doesn't burn or mature at high temperatures like normal engine lubricants. Pretty much nothing can break. The design is there. building it is another story. (studied this while I was at uni)

Do you mean the Ford Prefect!Had a '46 when I was in my teens.I know what you mean about second gear!Tough on the cross-way front spring and snapping axles. But I loved the car!

Ok, fair enough. So let me re-phrase for ya. as a general rule: 'good engineering+basic design=reliable'.
Thats why an over-complacated cars like the mitsi gto will never be as reliable as a corolla.

Nothing wrong with boring cars; they serve the purpose they are designed for.

bluecambridge, May 28, 12:40am
Yes! But I don't believe that all reliable cars are necessarily boring. IMO Toyotas in general use good engineering and sound basic design (the VZ v6 perhaps one exception), therefore a Supra or Celica should be just as reliable as a garden variety Corolla, yet are much more exciting to look at and drive. Arguably, reliability only becomes an issue with these higher performance cars due to them being thrashed and poorly maintained!

You lot are sick. How has the Mighty Multipla not been mentioned!
Good lord.

bluecambridge, May 28, 2:03am
No, no.surely the multipla belongs as number 1 in the "most beautiful car in the world" thread LOL

michael.benn, May 28, 2:04am
Honda Accords are one of the most reliable cars in the world.

doug207, May 28, 2:06am
Ah yes, my mistake sorry.

My vote goes to the w126 (!) Mercs used as Taxis in Egypt, Saudi, India etc etc

Next I'd say a Tatra 607 because I bet no-one here has touched or worked on one.

doug207, May 28, 2:07am
Also the early 30's Hundon sixes went for ever.

antwerp87, May 28, 2:10am
Dam right. Everyone must agree to this statement. Because Honda's are awesome

bluecambridge, May 28, 2:21am
Those Tatras are absolutely fascinating, I've only ever seen pictures of them would love to actually ride in one or just see one up close - the earlier V570, T77, T87 & T97 are amazing! Have you driven a 607!
