the X3 is without doubt , the ugliest small soft roader out there, its horrible to look at, but drives ok, Honda crv is a nanny car, The volvo XC is a great drive, looks smart too. & very practical. seem to be quite reliable too.

Go out and drive a Commodore. I think your delusions of needing a "4WD" to get around in the city are misplaced at best.
A VE has plenty of headroom and huge seats for the fat asses they're marketed to. You'll probably have room to spare.

I'd stay away from Volvo, especially the 2nd hand imported from Singapore. had one . endless problems. If petrol and service cost isn't an issue for you, X3 is a good car but for economy I'd stick with CRV
