How do you reckon a pair of panty hose would go on anything with a serpentine belt system lol

skin1235, May 2, 10:11pm

hilux 20km from the road end copped a stick through the oil filter - break another stick off, jam it in and keep filling the sump with water until you get home - and it still goes, no rattles, - okay it's diesel but not turbo'd, I've brought her home before sitting on wooden chocks cos the rear spring was broken

I was thinking the other day how nice life has been since I got better cars and maintained them better so tend not to get surprises needing tools.

I agree about the cellphone.

im_andrew, May 3, 1:53am
Cheap $2 shop pocket knife. Its saved me a few times.

tmenz, May 3, 4:56pm
The one time I broke down in the back of beyond and needed to call someone, there was no cellphone coverage - 10km to the top of a hill before I could use the cellphone!

A block of wood to sit the jack on.

We had a tyre give out going down the plains at Burnham, managed to get off the road OK and stopped on the shoulder, put the jack under and wound it up, and pushed the jack into the ground.Bugger, nice firm shoulder, not.Tyre was too stuffed to move (Left front on a Golf), so spent 20 minutes walking up and down the railway line looking for something to spread the load. There's never any rubbish when you want some.Eventually found a cast sleeper plate which got bloody heavy by the time I got back to the car.Ended up taking over an hour to change a tyre.

First job when I got home, make a block with a recess in it to take the base of the jack.

In each of our everyday cars we have a tow rope and jumper leads (helped someone once). I also have a set of allen keys in each car too ??

shuddupowh, May 3, 7:51pm
My boot has:- small trolly jack, wheel brace, factory toolkit (bmw), jumper leads, towrope and a few screw drivers in the drivers door. And gloveboxhas a few random fuses. And fire extinguiser in passengers footwell. Most of these have been added due to close calls.and common sense.

Ah yes but BMW s have pretty good kit . Unlike UK/Europe we dont have a good nationwidebreakdown service , AAno good at anything other than flat batteries & fuel . Had an XE falc van with 302& 5speedclutch cable broke regulary socarried spare & replaced in 30 minutes. Also replaced thewater pump on side of the road , I am a .great believer in murphys law .

budgel, May 4, 8:46pm
Its been quite a while since last won a race!

Spare fuel cap - no longer have spare fuel cap cause it's on the car!
Fueses, bulbs, indicator repair tape, cable ties, duct tape - accident stuff
Hand tools, jumper leads, tow rope, small tarp. emergency windscreen.
AND emergency eftpos card.

neo_psy, May 5, 3:03am
I'm slightly obsessive about this. but I have a storage box with. jumper cables, a couple of screwdrivers, couple of spanners, water, fire extinguisher, 2 anoraks, first aid kit, blanket, couple of towels, several pairs of disposable gloves, torch, hand sanitiser, sunscreen, antihistamines, emergency windscreen stickers, clear packing tape, bungy cords, rope. oh and some rice crackers and barley sugars. basically I'm prepared for anything! hahahaha.

enough tools to change the tyre. and i have road side rescue. and jumper cables. and i have been meaning to put a $20 note in my car but every time i think abbout doing it i've spend all my money lol

mantagsi, May 5, 5:16am
$20 note in a place *reasonably* hard to get to is a good idea, has saved me before :) especially if you get a breakdown you cant fix on the side of the road, that $20 is just right for a phonecard, and a drink & pie while you wait for the rescue squad

a18a, May 5, 5:19am
I keep a $20 note folded up under the battery cover of my phone. came in handy once for a game of paintball lol
