Isuzu Bighorn 4JB1 2.8 Smokes when Cold Start

I have replaced the 2.8 4jb1 motor in my Bighorn Lotus Turbo and intercooler, the owner of the donor truck that I got the motor from said it smoked up real bad on a cold start, smoked and smelled like diesel for a bout 2 or 3 minutes. Now the mechanics told him it was the injector pump. Now I have it fitted in my truck, I have fitted a new injector pump ($400) and another set of injectors that I new to be working OK. The motor still smokes up bad on a cold start so I am thinking that this is something else causing this. I freed up the flap in the exhaust that looks like an exhaust brake when I had it out, but Im not completely sure if I have the vacuum pipes on correct. Is there any thing else I can look at, the motor does not seem to have a lot of power. It drives very clean once warmed up.

Is it starting up on all 4 cylinders. If not check glow plugs. Also check tappet adjustment and block up exhaust gas recirculation.

What's the air filter like! Also might pay to check injector pump timing.

Timing looks complicated, whats the easy way to do it, do you think it may be advanced or retarded.

most likely glow plugs, but I agree check air filter 1st, test the power feed to the glow plugs 2ndthen remove glow plugs and bench test 3rd.

Timing is best left to diesel specialists. You could however mark your pump's current postion (as a reference point), and try turning it slightly in both directions from that reference point and see if has any effect. 4JB1s are direct injection motors, so glow plugs won't make much, if any difference. My one used to start first pop on a frosty morning without using glow plugs. They just idle a bit low when cold.

These 2.8's used to smoke badly when started cold if the engine oil level was near high or overfilled. keeping level up to half way on stick usually made a difference.

Thanks guys I have taken all the info on board and will be checking it all. I think I need to advance the timing,, I was advised on another forum to dissconect one of the temp sensors, the result was that the timing advances slightly and the glow plugs stay on a bit longer. This worked very well and the truck is going good now.

It is a 1990 Isuzu 2.8 automatic with the lotus extras, it also has a high roof, and is the only high roof one i have seen.
