im thinking about getting gps for my partner 4 bday.do u need to buy maps all the time or do u download them if so how and at wat cost! which brands r good!

No you don't have to buy new maps. The differences are small from year to year so if you're prepared to put up with an occasional unrecognized roundabout where lights used to be or vice versa and a few road changes you don't have to renew the maps at all. There are free maps available for Garmins.

im enjoying my new tomtom 180 but it seems the 2 best brands are tomtom or garmin

Don't spend too much on one as they are really already being superseded by smart phones which carry several advantages. I have a high end Tomtom but find I just tend to use the phone instead.
