Has anyone had any experience with those 'no-brand' versions available from some retailers! When i say 'no-brand' I mean they're not any big brand we recognise. They seem very good value. I currently use a Garmin, pretty good overall, but the maps are quite a few years old now, and may be cheaper to buy a new unit than buy new maps.

I have had a no name brand, avoid, they do nor break the "you get what you pay for" rule.
Google nzopengps and update your Garmin for zilch.

Ive got a really good satnave. It comes from a company called wises. Ive dropped it several times and it works. Its been sat on,bent, and still it works. A massive suprise was that when dropped in water it still continued to work. --Great GPS mr wises

Any smart phone can have google navigation free, which included street view. Why bother paying for a GPS!

Because you need to pay for 3G network while its on and when you travel you use a phone network not a satellite like a GPS unit

Been in a car with a TomTom, much prefer my Uniden. The Tom just speaks the command, and if there is conversation in the car you miss what it said. My Uniden has a pleasant Ding! before it speaks, and you do not miss what it says, having been alerted by the ding.

I have a little Satnav I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones My Satnav is my wife
It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive "It's 60 kilometres an hour", it says "You're doing sixty five"
It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever Safe to overtake
It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene
It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear.
I'm sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice
It fills me up with counselling Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it And get a quieter sort!
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn the damned thing off.

GOODChoice. I had a Garmin. If the chap who bought it is reading, I sincerely hope it knows it's way around Christchurch better than it does in Auckland and Rotorua ! that's about it. Navman has taken me everywhere between Doubtless bay in the far north and Dunedin without a single problem.
