Is this car collectable?

I think it will fair better than most $$wise.
What makes a car collectable!
I believe when we get a bit older, we (hopefully) have a few spare $$$ and want a car that we either owned or aspired to own when we were young.
For us old farts, that was the Monaro, Gt falcon, Charger, or American Muscle car.
For the younger generation, (who will be older and richer when the time comes to sell this car) the car they aspire to own right now may well be the Nissan 350Z.
Cheers Stevo

Not to mentionthat the old Aussie cars had racing success and pedigree on both sides of the Tasman.
The 350z was nothing special at the time, I liked em but they share most of thier parts with family sedan Skyline/G35 and SUV Nissan Armada. They aren't desired by the retarded drift crowd so don;t expect prices to be great in 20 years.
You'd be better off getting 15-20 grand for it and chucking it in stocks or term deposit long term.

Come on Bryce, your a car dealer, we fall in love with cars, then we sell them, take the money and say "whew" nice car. Two minutes later it is history. No racing history like a very few of the Jappo sports cars. Import a 89 Godzilla for less than half the price and use it, race it, generally mess around and have fun. There is, especially for a car dear, no fun in storing a car. Particularly one that is basically a souped up 2 door Maxima. :-)

Yeah, he forgot the Justy.

hairypup shrinks quietly into background.

I think hairypup may have been neutered!

The original question was is this japper collectable! No it aint and never will be! Jap crap! You said it Phillip not me. Surely you "automotive experts" can see that slopemobiles are only for hairbags and nanastransport and are not collectable

pollymay, Mar 16, 11:15am
The biggest loads of crap on earth were belted out by the english and people hold onto and collect them like gods gift. Leak oil, restrictive inlets and undersized exhausts, hideous drivetrain reliability, heaters that didn't work. Much rather drive some of that "crappy" jap stuff. The price of AE86 corollas went through the roof when that initial D drifting stuff started, even wrecked ones go for decent money cause of the fanboys.

Hi Todd, did you lie in Tauranga when you purchased from me. What did you buy! I trust it gave you good service.

trouser, Mar 16, 1:20pm
That and people actually have to want them. The 350z was never a particularly desirable or noteworthy car. There is nothing special enough about them to warrant future collector interest.

carstauranga001, Mar 16, 1:25pm
Thanks to you all for your thoughts. I agree with most here that this car isn't a great "investment" due to it's current value, the cost to hold it and the shear volume of these produced. I did briefly think it would be cool to have in the shed for a toy and the 3900 km bit is amazing thus tempting me. She was to be in an auction in Japan yesterday but I decided against bidding. In the current economy I need my money in stock on lot, not stored in a shed.

rz supra manual. 10 years ago could be bought for 15k in reasonable condition with reasonable kms. try finding one now for less than 25

they have been steadyly rising since then.

pretty similar comparison to a 350 imo

phillip.weston, Mar 16, 2:55pm
Where did I say they were crap! I said that some of them can be mundane, but that's not just limited to Japanese cars, plenty of American, European and even Australian cars can be just as bland to drive. I did say however that Toyota is #1 worldwide, mostly due to their impeccible reliability record. Ford gave up their #1 position years ago to the Japanese, just get over it already.

phillip.weston, Mar 16, 2:57pm
I would definitely take a Z33 over a JZA80 Supra, I really dislike the typical 90s Toyota styling, although it really is a technical achievement what they have done with it - it looks like an incredibly heavy car but it's much lighter than the MkIII it replaced.

r15, Mar 16, 3:41pm
all 1400kg of it - with fuel / oils / shit laying around in the car

hotrodtodd1, Mar 16, 4:17pm
Yes we were in Tauranga then. My wife bought a blue Honda Accord wagon from you. I turned up to collect it in my T bucket. I later bought a W8 in Chch & had dealer issues so dropped in for some good advice.

Would happily buy a car from you again

carstauranga001, Mar 16, 6:33pm
I remember you mate, hope you're OK down there with all that's going on.

foxdonut, Mar 16, 7:49pm
You're dreaming.

Regardless, the car was around 60 grand new in 1996. -$35,000.00 over 15 years is a pretty shithouse investment.

vtecintegra, Mar 16, 7:55pm
Pretty good for a car though.

Check out the depreciation on something like a Maxima or Commodore over even two or three years

tgray, Mar 16, 8:01pm
A 350Z should be bought to drive and enjoy.
Who cares what it is worth 10 years from now.
If you mean 'collectable' by wanting to make money in the future, I would rather put 20K in the bank at 4% as you will make more than buying this particular car.

foxdonut, Mar 16, 8:05pm
Yes, lets base our investments on which loses us the most amount the fastest.

carstauranga001, Mar 29, 3:30pm
Interestingly this car is still available. In auction again today so yet to reach owners reserve.

i-n-horz, Mar 29, 3:46pm
If it's collectable to you then go for it,make good use of it,enjoy it but if you going to wait around untill someone else wants it as a collectable item and you make money on it well then in my opinion it's time that could be spent enjoying something else that you would want to keep.

i-n-horz, Mar 29, 4:02pm
Lol.when I first looked I thought, 'what the hell is that dirty square hole for!'.gonna be a long day.
