Motorbike re-vin. Where to start?

attitudedesignz, Mar 24, 5:19am
I've spent the last half hour trying to navigate the NZTA site (holy crap, what a mission. No need to make it easy for us "normal" people).

I'm looking at buying an older Honda 250 road bike and want to get it back on the road.

It has been on the road here before but it doesn't have any plates or paperwork with it so i don't know where to start.

Can someone give me an idea on where i start and what kind of costs are involved with a bike re-vin.

i started with putting my bike on trademe and leaving it to someone else. it was a rgv250 so it probably would have been worth it but you need lots of time and backup money and backup vehicle. there are lots of things that can go wrong. i think they do a thorough checking of the bike, and that costs $350 odd. and then you may have to go spend more money on other things to get it on the road. thats my experience of it anyway

might cost more now cuz i think the $350 involved the reg. so it could be 500+{ now

first thing is to get a form from the vtnz or vins that you put all the info on it and take it to the police to get them to declare its legally yours and not stollen, then get a brake check if its after an 1986!not 100% sure on the year actually but most bikes these days will need it

I did a 250cc virago last month for a mate. Cost of revnning dependson bike CC as I understand. The Check on the Virago itself cost 149 from VTNZ, and the numberplate and 6 month rego cost $ 274. As the bike was comparatively new I didn't have to do a brake test or anything, just had to book in for revinning. Had to do police declaration to say it wasn't stolen, but that just involves taking a form to the cop shop and letting them look up bike on their system.
Hope that helps

You have a great taste in motorbikes, I semi restored it and rebuilt an Rgv 250cc,1990 from Australia. Best purchase ever, I want to move up to a 600cc, if I do though I don't think I will ever be able to let go of it. Its just one of those bikes. My first bike as well. Bikes just arent built like it anymore.
