Put together a CV and knock on as many doors as possible.
Every panel shop you can find.
You may need to start as the shop junior, doing all the tasks that no one else will to get a foot in the door.

trdbzr, Feb 14, 5:06pm
Like thunderbolt said, door knock on every panel beaters door you find till kingdom come. Print loads of CV's, look up panelbeaters on yellow pages and give it a go.

It's good to hear that you are motivated to work and join the automotive trade.

I definitely do not want to discourage you from following your dreams, but if you want to make more money, I would only like to advise you to pursue a different career/trade. Like being an electrician, a plumber or a fridgie. Once you qualify and spend a few years in the trade, all you'll need is a van and tools and you are free to go anywhere to do a job, also you'll have no overheads. This is just my opinion. But, anyway, best of luck.

Yeah. Two in my family are mechanics (one of them worked in F1 overseas) and you will never see the kind of income you'll get as an electrician or plumber.

And even if the money doesn't convince you - think about how many women don't want to get felt up by a guy with greasy, filthy hands. Pick another trade - for the ladies.

Thats not very "PC", He may be gay !

xs1100, Feb 15, 3:07am
what ever you do trade wise do it because you want to not because of the money.

gunhand, Feb 15, 3:15am
You want to be a painter or panelbeater! There probably the two lowest paid jobs in the car trade. Only way to make good money is to go to aussie and be a production line painter. Few days just painting few days doin prep. Boring as but some good money to be made and some pay excellent bonuses each month. I work in this trade but Im lucky I get to take most cars from start to finish , panel through to final polish,so for me its quite personal and Im the only one to blame if it looks crap. And like most trades your mates will want you to do there cars for nothin.

owene, Feb 15, 3:28am
A gay mechanic! Haha that's novel.

bestgames, Feb 15, 3:34am
While I imagine many gay guys might think a buff, blokey mechanic was just the thing they would like. I am sure just as many would find diminished pay packets and filthy hands just as unappealing as the ladies.

mugenb20b, Feb 15, 3:37am
Bullshit! Pick any career you like, just make sure it pays good money when you're done studying. You can do your panel beating studies at a later stage or do courses part time.

my brother in law finished his apprenticeship as a panel beater a few years back he was on less than $20 an hour once qualified which I thought was pitiful myself. my mate since high school did an apprenticeship in stainless steel fabrication and while he was an apprentice was getting $20 an hour not sure what hes on now but hes not poor

owene, Feb 15, 9:13am
Yeah, only a certain type of woman!

wizardoo, Feb 15, 12:01pm
Thanks umm I think. I have a love of cars and can not stand to see them in disrepair. No I am not gay, My grandad owned a petrol station workshop my uncle is a panel beater spray painter with his own shop but it is to small to take me on so it is kinda in the family.

owene, Feb 15, 1:47pm
Go for it. At least you're getting off your arse and doing SOMETHING. Enjoy it and keep your eyes open to further options - if you decide to add panelbeating to your training then you can do that later. Any trade is worth having as long as you remain aware of what other futures there are.

jason18, Feb 15, 1:49pm
I know a lesbian mechanic.

wizardoo, Feb 15, 2:02pm
To be honest I dont mind if I can get a job with anything in the car industryweather it be selling car parts, any workshop, but not selling cars. I just have a love of cars. Please dont say to work in a petrol station because now days that has nothing to do with cars it is more about taking money and selling milk and making coffees :-)

modie61, Feb 15, 3:38pm
Set your mind on what you want to do wizard and do everything you can to get there, dont worry there will be something out there for you, just do it. Door knock as said before,be honest and be yourself are my tips. Good luck.

incar., Feb 15, 4:41pm
Really! What type of woman would that be! Perhaps in your case or someone you know but I assure you definitely not in my case!
In regards to poster #1 I think go for it get a trade behind you, panel beating can branch off to operating a small business even mobile like Paintless dent removal or mobile touch up etc etc

Mechanic here in Oz, on AUD 130k/ year or 165k kiwi plus 9% super and 12 weeks holiday a year, who wants to be crawling thru roofs or sifting thru people shit (literally), try and get an apprenticeship on heavy diesel you won't look back.
