I'm looking for an apprentice later this year, give me a call if you want. Based in Point Chevalier, big new workshop.
Also looking for a qualified mechanic if anyone is looking! (blatant plug I know)

Why do you think you are a dick! Sounds like you have it all.

Probably as common as those ones that think a mustache with waxed tips is just to die for.

I don't think you are a dick either, so that is two here who think you are lucky and cool.

Probably none too smart - being that you think the mechanic game is as financially rewarding as going plumber, electrician etc but par for the course.

OP if you are none too smart follow lyonruge's advice. You'll be happy and own three houses, a 'hot' wife (eye of the beholder) and an SUV and boat by the time you are 42. Apparently.

Odds and averages are irrelevant - hedge your bets on anonymous anecdotes from the (apparent) top percentile of grease monkeys.

Fair enough, I was just curious. I made the most money being a self employed fridgie for 5 years. It was only then that I was able to save up a deposit to buy a house. Circumstances have changed a couple of years ago, so I'm working as a full time mechanic again. However, I am 30 years old (+ I have a wife, 3 kids and 1 on the way), have a 4 bedroom rental house near Wellington and I have a nice large house in a small town + a semi rural piece of land. Had I been working for wages as a mechanic since day one, I would not have been able to purchase a second house. So, to summarise, get a trade qualification that will pay good money, register for GST and be self employed asap. Being a garage owner is fine, but overheads can be huge and a hassle with hopeless staff that come and go.

What i think is important is to learn a trade, and a good work ethic, then you can do anything, and theres no reason you cant be a mobile mechanic, little overheads, self employed.
