Can some one explain how you can actually work out the fuel economy of a vehicle by the ratings out of 6. Im looking at a car with an economy rating of 3.5 out of 6.6 what!

Just look on the label to see if the government has been intelligent enough to include litres per 100km.

reggies-- Put simply the gubbiment spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money dreaming upa "simple" fuel economy rating system.
There is apsolutely NO way of working out the system
First of allwhat they do is say that the "average" kiwi drives 14000km a year.
Said mythical creature drives a mixture of city driving,Motorway driving and open road driving. What percentage of each has never been revealed but one would guess its based on 50% country and 50% city driving.
They then on that basis calculate how much that car will cost to travel those 14000kmbased on petrol costing $2.00 a litre.
On THAT basis the vehicle is given a star rating from 1 to 61 being a sherman tankand 6 being a 50cc stepthrough scooter.
Clear as mud!
My advice would be to glance at the star rating but more relivant is the dollar to run the car a year-also on the form

Of course the gubbiment COULD have contracted the AA and used the ALREADY AVAILABLE.MPG/kmlfiguresfor city driving and country driving they have on file for most if not all cars on the roads in NZ
I understand the AA wanted 100k to supply the info.

Ah, the Fuelsaver blurb. Another entirely pointless item on TM to block with Adblock Plus.
