What is the lifespan of a spakplug!
I do 750k aweek all at 100-110kph open road running. When do they loose their effectivness! economy, etc

My ones get changed every 90,000km as per manufacturers recommendations, but I did mine at 70,000km.

Maybe you should state what kind of plugs you are using

tuttyclan, May 17, 2:39pm
Old carburettered cars would need standard plugs changed at about 10,000 km,Fuel injected cars at around 40,000 km and 100,000 km with the expensive ones.

Ive never changed the plugs on my carburettered car wit the oil change every 10,000 kms, What a crock, I never changed the plugs on my old carby datsun 1200 for over 80,000 kms and they were still looking mint as !

gadgit3, May 17, 7:03pm
Might look mint but I doubt they were working efficiently. and I highly doubt after 80000kms a standed $2.50 spark plug looks "mint". the tip would be very worn after 30000kms.
Platnum or iridium tipped plugs will last 100000 but I doubt you were running them in your old Dato!

tuttyclan, May 17, 9:20pm
That right they will keep working to a point but after so many kms the spark plugs get past their best and fuel consumption goes up,much more than the cost of replacement spark plugs.

Don't you just push them against a vice to close up the gap in refit!.

johnf_456, May 18, 6:42am
10,000km is very excessive

dave653, May 19, 1:50am
I had my Champions in for nearly 100,000, fitted new NGK's, hardly noticed the difference. If it's gapped right, and not completely rooted, whats the issue!

pc_uncorrect, May 19, 1:57am
Change my toyota (work hack) every xmas, cheap denso plugs from toyota dealer, the car does approx 7500 a year max.

jmma, May 19, 2:10am
Then why did you change them!

gregelz, May 19, 3:24am
Had a rebuilt motor with a few mods and brand new NGK plugs in it, Do you know what the fuel consumption of a 1200 Datsun motor is ! next to nothing. I had checked the gap on them and gave them a clean and shoved them back in, Not really after 500 hp so did not have to shove new ones in every 10,000kms, Just saying it was running fine on same set of plugs and didnt notice any excessive fuel consumption.

Reality is 8000 kilometres is the fuel effective life of a standard plug.
That is the point where electrode erosion wear and edge rounding causes fuel economy to suffer-and observation on a tunsecope showsexcessive firing voltage requirement.

If your car is tuned and running properly then you'd expect to get 30 or possibly 40k out of a set of standard plugs. Platinums are recommended replaced at 100k.

30 or possibly 40k out of a set of standard plugs.

Perhaps if you ever saw spark plug firing voltages on a tunescope-
you would understand the effects of spark erosion from igniting a fuel air mixture under combustion pressure and temperature.
